Has anyone perhaps connected a Wemos D1 mini pro to an 18650 cell?
I mean will the voltage from a single cell be enough to make the board work stably. From the schematic it looks like there is an RT9013 which is an LDO. According to the datasheet it should work because the drop out voltage is 250mV.

It will work, but until the voltage drops below about 3.6V, so you lose about half the capacity and the circuit may be unstable.
The way I do it is that I hook up between D1 and the liion a module of the simplest single-cell powerbank for a dollar, which does the following:
    -charger for the cell
    -step-up 5V for D1
    over-discharge protection for the cell
