    There was a problem during the update - the message: CRITICAL SERVICE FAILED popped up. Nothing can be done - RESETTING TO INITIAL STATE kicks in, then CRITICAL SERVICE FAILED still pops up.

    ADVANCED OPTIONS appear, when I choose System Restore I get a message that system restore points have not been created.

    Sorry - I don't know anything about it and I don't know what SMART is.
    The system does not boot, so you cannot run any diagnostic programs.

    The USB flash drive can be booted, so all programs are available from USB.
    For example, run the bootable Ultimate Boot CD and in it some SMART analysis program.
