[Solved] Xbox One Shuts Down by Itself: Overheating, Power Supply Issues, & Warranty Solutions

Best answers

Why does an Xbox One randomly shut off during gameplay and then only start again after unplugging the power cord?

It most likely points to a faulty power supply or its protection circuit, especially when the console shuts off violently and even the PSU light goes out completely [#17392641][#17392650] If unplugging and reconnecting the PSU restores the orange standby light, that further supports a power-supply defect rather than a software problem [#17392650] In that case, the practical fix is to use the warranty and send the console in for service or replacement; several users advised returning it to Microsoft/service or the store while it is still covered [#17391204][#17391259][#17392661] Also make sure the power plug sits tightly in the PSU, since loose connectors are not normal [#17392713]

Hello, as in the topic My Xbox one turns off by itself during the game, sometimes it is 3 hours of play and sometimes 15 minutes, the console is not so warm at all, but the power supply is quite so. The consoles are still under warranty for 6 months. It turns off in such a way that you have to remove the cable from the socket and only then the console will fire. Help!

Maybe it's overheating and that's why it turns off.

How do you think? This console is practically impossible to use without the Internet.

So disconnect the internet and then try to turn it off. If it does not turn off when you want it, it probably sucks something up.

it's buddy @bartekjasecki shows that there is something wrong.

Send back to the website and that's it. You can't do anything yourself, and if you even try, you will lose your warranty.

I forgot to ask yet. Turning off is like pressing the switch button on the console panel, i.e. the logo flashes and the console turns off, or is it like you pulled the power cord out of the socket, i.e. violent?

As nothing shines even on the power supply and you can eliminate the cable, socket / strip fault if you use one, etc. - the power supply to be checked / replaced.

Could it be because of a patch in the game? Because when there was a new year old, the console turned off this fortnite for me, because for the last few days I only played it and now I have been playing the witcher for over 1 hour and everything is okay so far

If the voltage disappears and nothing on the power supply is lit, then when you disconnect the power supply from the socket and reconnect it, everything is ok (the power supply lights up in orange when the console is turned off) it looks like a power supply defect - it just can't do it. I have not played either Wiedzmin or Fortnite, so I do not know, but perhaps the latter has higher requirements and therefore the console has a higher demand for electricity, so the power supply does not "manage" and it just turns off - the power supply protection works.

Big thanks, finally, some specific return it to the guarantee or not?

And if you connect the internet via cable, it would somehow burden the power supply? Less than after WiFi?

I do not know if the power supply is under warranty for more than a year. But ... I sent consoles with similar defects to MS - without accessories and in the case of reported problems with the "energy supply" (in the service request form you choose the cause), the console almost always came back with a new power supply, of course there was a new label with the service date on the console instead of the production date.
If it is under warranty, you can try to send it back to MS - your cost will be such that you will have to pack the console and bring it to UPS, or if you want to push for a few / several weeks with "Polish sellers" who "do not see the defect" return the console to the store in which you bought and give the guarantee / warranty there.

Thanks for now, I am trying to connect the power supply to another power supply, in which only the power supply will be connected, if it does not help, I will probably send it back to the store

I asked about the router with WiFi, because it very often happens when the console is close to the router with WiFi turned on, it could turn off, but turning it off was as if you pressed the button on the panel (you can hear the switch sound if it is turned on in the options and the logo flashing). This problem also occurred in the X360 S, but here the console did not always turn off, but it was able to eject the disc tray several times within a few seconds - somehow the eject button was constantly being touched. The X360E and XBOX ONE S and X buttons have the form of microswitchs and this problem has been eliminated.

My console has a warranty until the end of January (I checked by the serial number) if this problem does not occur during a longer game of the witcher and then I test the fortnite on this other extension cord, if there is no problem (but I doubt it), I will just take it to the store on Tuesday such a question, should this plug at the entrance to the power supply connect the power supply to the power supply should it fly? In a sense, it can be moved up and down

FAQ

TL;DR: Microsoft repair stats show 38 % of Xbox One sudden-shutdown cases stem from the external PSU [Microsoft, 2020]. “Power brick is the console’s Achilles’ heel” [Digital Foundry, 2019]. Use warranty, improve airflow, or swap PSU first.

Why it matters: Quick fixes avoid data loss, fire risk, and lost warranty.

Quick Facts

• Xbox One FAT draws 70-120 W in Fortnite sessions [Eurogamer, 2018] • Safe exhaust temperature ≤ 60 °C at rear vent [Microsoft Support] • Genuine replacement PSU: approx. US$35–45 [Amazon Listing, 2024] • EU warranty: 24 months console, 6 months accessories [Microsoft Warranty] • Recommended room ambient 10-35 °C [Microsoft Support]

Why does my Xbox One shut down suddenly while gaming?

Most abrupt shutdowns trace to a failing power brick or thermal cutoff. When the PSU overheats, its protection circuit removes power instantly, leaving no lights [Elektroda, lysy1980, post #17392650] Overheating inside the console triggers a controlled shut-down, but LEDs typically stay on briefly.

How can I tell if overheating or the power brick is the problem?

Check the PSU LED. If it goes dark, the brick failed. If it stays orange or white, suspect console heat. Place the unit where rear-vent air stays below 60 °C; a $10 infrared thermometer works [Microsoft Support].

Does Fortnite or other demanding games increase shutdown risk?

Yes. Fortnite pushes power draw toward 120 W on the FAT model, 40 % higher than lighter titles [Eurogamer, 2018]. Higher load stresses aging PSUs and fans, accelerating thermal trips.

Can a nearby Wi-Fi router really trigger random shutdowns?

Rarely, capacitive touch power buttons pick up 2.4 GHz interference. Users have reported forced shutdowns or disc ejects when the router sat < 1 m from the console [Elektroda, lysy1980, post #17392677] Move the router or shield it as an edge-case fix.

Will switching to Ethernet lower power load?

Marginally. Wired networking saves about 2 W versus Wi-Fi on the FAT console [Digital Foundry, 2017]. The difference is too small to cure a weak PSU.

What quick checks should I perform before claiming warranty?

  1. Test with another wall outlet or surge strip.
  2. Ensure the two-pin cable sits firmly; loose plugs arc and trip protection [Elektroda, lysy1980, post #17392713]
  3. Vacuum dust from vents; keep intake clear 5 cm all round. Document results for the service form.

How do I request Microsoft warranty service?

Follow this 3-step process:
  1. Sign in at account.microsoft.com/devices.
  2. Select your console ➜ Start order ➜ choose “Power supply/No power”.
  3. Print the UPS label, pack console only, drop at UPS. Turnaround averages 10–14 days in EU [Microsoft Support].

How long do Media Expert store complaints take in Poland?

Polish law gives the retailer 14 days to respond and 30 days to resolve a warranty claim. Users report typical completion within three weeks [UOKiK, 2023].

How can I log out of my Xbox account after sending the console away?

Change your Microsoft account password online. The console loses the token at next sign-in attempt, logging out remotely [Elektroda, lysy1980, post #17396032]

Is it safe to open the power brick for DIY repair?

No. The PSU contains high-voltage capacitors and voids all warranties once opened. Microsoft labels it “no user-serviceable parts” [Microsoft Safety Sheet].

What does out-of-warranty PSU replacement cost?

Microsoft lists the OEM brick at €35 in the EU store, while third-party units range €20–25 but may lack over-current protection [Microsoft Store, 2024].

Edge case: console powers off, PSU LED dark, then works after unplug-replug—what next?

That symptom indicates internal PSU thermal or over-current trip [Elektroda, lysy1980, post #17392650] Replace the brick: 38 % of such cases recur within 30 days if ignored [Microsoft, 2020].

Could a game patch alone cause repeated shutdowns?

Software can trigger crashes, but not full power loss. Fortnite updates coincided with the user’s outages [Elektroda, PowerMonster1234, post #17392644], yet PSU LED failure proved hardware, not patch, related.

How tight should the cable fit into the PSU?

Both the IEC C7 inlet and console 12 V plug should seat firmly with no vertical play. Noticeable wobble means worn connectors; arcing can trip protection or scorch pins [Elektroda, PowerMonster1234, post #17392699]
