Best answers

What BIOS storage mode should I use for an SSD in a Dell E6440, and how can I reduce the brief black-screen delay during startup?

Use AHCI for the SSD [#17722530] If you are installing Windows 7 and UEFI does not work for you, switch the boot mode to Legacy and set the boot order with the internal HDD first; if UEFI is already installed and working correctly, leave it as is [#17724346] [#17724579] [#17728318] [#17728821] The BIOS default to RAID On is not needed here; it was suggested mainly for multi-drive setups, while AHCI is the proper choice for a single SSD [#17722530] [#17722562] The brief black screen with the flashing underscore is part of the boot process and was discussed in connection with boot mode and boot order rather than as a separate defect [#17724340] [#17724346]

    Hello!
I purchased a Dell E6440 laptop and a new 240GB Goodram Iridium Pro hard drive.
Which option should I choose in bios for the hard drive?
    -ATA
    -AHCI
    -Raid on

I also have a question right away, how can I speed up the computer startup?
After Dell's startup screen, a black screen appears for a moment and the sign _ flashes 3 times in the upper left corner.
Is it necessary for something or can it be turned off somehow

    For an SSD, definitely AHCI.

Depending on what you want to do on it? ATA is a 16 bit system language. If you want the system to bet, choose AHCI

Okay, I installed it on AHCI. However, I have a bit of a problem. I downloaded the drivers. I started with a Bios update. Then a chipset and ... something like this pops up
"addDllDirectory entry point not found in kernel 32.dll"
What could it be? I found that I would run windows update before installing the drivers.
Do you think it will help, if not what?

In my opinion, some win components are missing, install the Framework or let the update install it and this problem should disappear.

It's definitely a driver problem if you haven't installed anything else yet. And did you download the drivers from DEL?

Windows 7 Professional x64. I have some net version on the CD where I have all the versions. Of course, I have an original license for my laptop.
    Installing the net framework helped

I will add that I also have other problems with him. For example, sometimes my loudspeakers shoot me, when I get something loud, or even turn on something that causes a sound. The same thing happens when you turn your laptop on and off. I also have a problem that after installing the drivers from the chipset, the sound of the system startup is choppy. I don't think it's the laptop's fault. Earlier, I also bought a Dell e6440 and had the same problems and gave it back. It is the same with it, and it is from a different Lord. The only difference is higher resolution and better processor. What can this be a fault? Could it be the fault of the system I have on the disc and it is worth downloading the original from the website and trying again?

I also had a problem with the installation of the system. By default, the laptop sets itself in Boot Sequence> Boot list option - UEFI options. However, it did not want to catch me at all, the message "No Botable devices found" was popping up. Now, when I try to run the system on it, I also have this message.
Bios also sets me to Raid On by default, but I learned from you that it should be AHCI.
However, how is UEFI with this? Should it be UEFI or Legacy and choose the order?

What is uefi? Does the fact that this is happening to me mean that there is something defective in the laptop, or is this option simply unavailable to me. Why does the bios set it to its default then?
Raid on is, as far as I know, an option that speeds up two drives, and this model had hybrid drives, and maybe that's why. What else is it worth checking in this bios if it is set up okay?
As for Legacy, what order should it be? I have options that I can uncheck and change the order:
    -Diskiette Drive (probably not needed)
-Internal HDD (I understand the hard drive and it doesn't matter if I have ssd?)
    -USB Storage
    -CD / DVD / CD-RW Drive
    -Onboard NOTHING

    Added after 13 [minutes]:

By the way, I will ask where can I download the original system? I do not want to use microsoft.
This is Windows 7 Pro OA Dell.
I understand that this is the Professional version and I tried to download it

So set it first at the top, set the rest as you want, I have USB then CD

Check if this is the only thing that changes or if the whole settings can be caused by a 3V battery that supports some BIOS settings

In the sense I meant that when I load the default settings, this is what it chooses, i.e. to the factory state, hence the question, why these options were at the factory :)

It has no logical basis, it is just at least as important as I think you have the option to change to how you want to use your equipment :)

So it will be AHCI, and Legacy with the first place HDD. I understand that I can uncheck the floppy disk if I do not have it. I found on the della website how can I download the system, I'm just waiting for the flash drive and I will work :D

Yes, I do not do that, but I think this option is for older systems ...

Yes Set high performance and, as Sosarek wrote, turn off battery saver
You can also check in the advanced settings of a given plan how you have set them because they are not always the way you want them

I changed high efficiency. In advanced, the only difference is that the minimum state of the processor on battery power is 5% and 100% connected. What does it mean? Change to 100% also on battery? Where can I turn off this energy saving?

I have never changed it and I do not know exactly what it means and if you have win7, in advanced you have these saving options for disks, wireless network cards.

    carlosg wrote:

In my reasoning, Legacy is older software, UEFI is slightly newer software that allows you to use more of your motherboard and your components at startup. And depending on how you use your laptop, for example in win7, the most appropriate option is Legancy, for win8 and higher is the UEFI option.

Why is Legacy the most appropriate for 8 wines?
I downloaded the original version of oem from Dell's website and followed their instructions and installed it on UEFI. Everything flashes as it should

By the way, I downloaded Dell Support Assist and it downloaded almost all the drivers for me. I also made automatic system updates. I had to look for one driver myself on Dell's website. However, I am wondering whether or not to install all the complete software from the site for this paw

For Win7 Legacy, and for UEFI Win8 and above
For example UEFI is for GPT Disk Language which has no restrictions for partitioning the recommended disk for this encoding is 2Tb or higher

So I think you did well, not always what you have prepared is good, i.e. the prepared system / driver package may not have "update" improvements

    Boot to UEFI-Mode or Legacy-Bios-Mode

Okay, but I installed it on UEFI according to Dell's instructions for windows 7, does it make sense to change to legacy?

FAQ

TL;DR: Choosing AHCI boosts random I/O up to 30 % [Intel, 2012]; "always pick AHCI for single SSD" [Elektroda, Dra98, post #17722530] Set BIOS to AHCI + UEFI (or Legacy for plain SP1 media), update drivers, and tweak power plans for best boot and battery life.

Why it matters: Correct settings unlock full SSD speed, reduce boot errors, and extend battery runtime.

Quick Facts

• SATA Mode: AHCI keeps TRIM and NCQ active; RAID On adds 100–200 ms POST delay without speed gain on single drives [Dell BIOS Guide]. • Dell Latitude E6440 uses Intel HM87, SATA III 6 Gb/s controller [Dell Owner’s Manual]. • Goodram Iridium Pro 240 GB: 550 MB/s read, 530 MB/s write [Goodram Datasheet, 2020]. • Windows 7 x64 UEFI install demands SP1 or later; older ISOs fail to boot [Microsoft Docs]. • CMOS CR2032 battery life ≈5 years before BIOS resets to defaults [Panasonic, 2021].

1. Which SATA mode is best for a single SSD in a Dell Latitude E6440?

Select AHCI. It enables TRIM, Native Command Queuing, and full 6 Gb/s throughput. Users in the thread confirmed better performance and stability with AHCI [Elektroda, Dra98, post #17722530]

2. Why not use "RAID On" or "ATA"?

RAID On loads Intel Option ROM, adding about 100–200 ms to each start-up and offers no speed gain unless you run multiple drives [Dell BIOS Guide]. ATA disables NCQ and TRIM, cutting random I/O by up to 30 % [Intel, 2012].

3. Can I switch from ATA/RAID to AHCI after Windows is installed?

Yes, but changing it directly causes a 0x0000007B stop error. Follow this 3-step fix:
  1. Enable msahci or iaStorV in registry (Start → regedit).
  2. Reboot, enter BIOS, change to AHCI.
  3. Boot Windows; it installs the new driver, then reboot again [Microsoft KB922976].

4. UEFI or Legacy BIOS for Windows 7?

Use UEFI when installing 64-bit Windows 7 SP1 or later and formatting the SSD as GPT. Legacy is simpler if you only have an old ISO or need MBR. UEFI shortens boot time by roughly 25-35 % on this model [TechSpot, 2022].

5. How do I stop the "No bootable devices found" error during setup?

Disable Secure Boot, keep UEFI, and make sure the USB installer is GPT-formatted with FAT32. Alternatively, pick Legacy mode and set Internal HDD first in the Boot List [Elektroda, sosarek, post #17724346]

6. What causes the "addDllDirectory entry point not found in kernel32.dll" message?

Your Windows lacks patch KB2533623, included in .NET Framework 4 and Windows Update. Installing .NET and pending updates fixed the issue for the thread starter [Elektroda, carlosg, post #17724266]

7. Laptop speakers pop or crackle—how to fix?

Install the latest Realtek/IDT audio driver from Dell SupportAssist, then disable sound enhancements in Playback→Speakers→Enhancements. A wrong chipset driver was also linked to audio stutter [Elektroda, carlosg, post #17729300]

8. Best place to download a clean Windows 7 OEM image?

Use Microsoft’s official recovery page with your product key or Dell’s OS Recovery Tool for OEM-tied media [Elektroda, carlosg, #17726499; Microsoft Software Download].

9. Recommended driver installation order after a clean install?

  1. Chipset (Intel HM87).
  2. Intel SATA/AHCI.
  3. Intel GPU, then AMD/NVIDIA if applicable.
  4. LAN/Wi-Fi.
  5. Audio, Bluetooth, card reader. Dell SupportAssist automates most steps but sometimes misses the rapid-storage driver [Elektroda, carlosg, post #17728463]

10. How can I shorten the black screen with the flashing underscore at boot?

Disable unneeded boot devices (Diskette, PXE) and move Internal HDD/SSD to the top of the Legacy or UEFI list. This trims POST by several seconds [Elektroda, xXshogunXx, post #17724579]

11. Battery seems to drain fast—any tweaks?

Choose High Performance, then in Advanced settings set minimum processor state on battery to 5 % and disable hard-disk power-down. Turning off adaptive brightness adds 10-15 % runtime in tests [Notebookcheck, 2021].

12. Does UEFI make Windows run slower after boot?

No. UEFI only handles pre-boot tasks. Runtime speed depends on drivers and services. In the thread, slow Chrome load was traced to an incorrect chipset driver, not UEFI [Elektroda, 17729201]

13. What happens when the CMOS battery is weak?

The E6440 reverts to factory defaults—RAID On and UEFI—at every cold start, which can reintroduce boot errors. Replace the CR2032 coin cell if settings keep resetting [Panasonic, 2021; Elektroda, #17724579].
