Hello, I would like an advice on the topic of buying a router that is to serve as a vpn access point, specifically nord vpn. It requires the OpenVPN protocol. I would like to spend a maximum of PLN 60 on the router, of course used ;)
I will add that there is no problem for me to upload dd-wrt or other software, as long as you do not have to manually edit the software, I cannot do it, unless someone helped :)

That's enough for me, it's only for tv to regionally blocked movies

Then you have to choose whether you feel better with dd-wrt or open-wrt and you need to look for the cheapest router with the fastest processor, at least 8MB Flash and 32MB RAM (or better even more).

TP-Link TL-WR1043ND v2 / v3 (in a black housing) would be a good candidate, but I see them not very much at this price.
Maybe something like this, although the antennas hidden under the plastic are not good for me, but at least it has a gigabit switch: WNDR4300 V1: https://allegro.pl/oferta/router-wifi-netgear-wndr4300-n750-dual-band- gigabi-7276770255

I just don't care about soft, as long as I don't have to interfere with some kernels, etc .. And do you propose something besides this TP-Link?

With such a low budget, there is not much room for dressing up. This WNDR4300v1 was still a solution there, although the TPL 1043NDv2 / v3 has a faster CPU.

I have a few routers at home, some grandfathers in total, but maybe something will do:
    -fon spot fon2201
    -linksys befw11s4 v4
    -tp link tl-wr740n

Will it be possible to run vpn on one of them? It doesn't have to be fast internet speed, but it has to support OpenVPN.

And what do the wikis of the two software projects you possibly want to install say? After all, have you checked if they will go to at least openwrt and ddwrt with the options you want (VPN)?

Out of all this, I would try 740n, because the other two are monuments. 740n is a total low-end, has 4MB flash (in some exotic versions it was even 2MB, but I think there was no such thing with us), there is nothing to expect, as long as you can pack in this 4MB soft with VPN at all - here reading the documentation for both projects should answer this question.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around finding an affordable WiFi router compatible with Nord VPN and OpenVPN, with a budget limit of PLN 60. Users are advised to consider routers that can support VPN protocols, specifically mentioning the need for at least 8MB Flash and 32MB RAM. Recommended models include the TP-Link TL-WR1043ND (v2/v3) and Netgear WNDR4300 (v1), both of which are noted for their performance and compatibility with custom firmware like DD-WRT or OpenWRT. The user also inquires about older models they possess, such as the Fon Spot Fon2201, Linksys BEFW11S4 (v4), and TP-Link TL-WR740N, seeking confirmation on their ability to run VPN services. The responses emphasize the importance of checking compatibility with OpenVPN and the limitations of older hardware.
