Please help me in the following matter. I want to either add a second hard drive to replace the current hard drive in the T480. My laptop is on its way to me by courier.
At the moment it has a 256 GB ssd, I want to either replace it or add a second ssd.
From the discussion forums, however, I see that the solution I have in the T470 will not fit. Here I have a 256 GB drive and an added SATA3 M2 2242 drive.
Only NVMe drives can be used on the T480

From the forums I read that the T480 may have the following 2 drives (they may be installed together):
    (1) M.2 2242 NVMe SSD disk in LTE modem slot.
    (2) M.2 2280 SSD or 2.5" wide 7mm high SATA3 SSD/HDD disk. T
My guess is that my laptop will have a 2280 slot occupied.

So am I right in thinking that I need to buy such a disk?

Or is it better to replace the primary drive?

But what about the Windows preinstalled there? There's probably some extra recovery partition in there.

From what I read, you can even insert a SANDISK ULTRA 2TB SATA3 3D NAND drive, only I don't know if it can be 2.5 inch or must be 2280. The specification says that you can insert a 2.5 inch one, but I will check what the output is, if after removing I am able to slip a 2.5 inch (7 mm) drive into the pocket of the adapter.

I'm still looking for a drive, because it turned out that it's not that easy.
At the moment I am waiting for a response from Lenovo whether this drive is compatible. Rather, I have to replace the basic drive with a larger one, because 2242 NVMe drives are expensive and the maximum is 500 GB, or rather they are 256 GB.

I am not sure if all the parameters of this drive are in line with the Lenovo specification. NVMe is, it's not on Sata, it's on PCIe, but I still prefer to ask before I buy.

    This one (Toshiba THNSN5256GPUK 256GB M.2 2280 SSD NVMe PCIe ) on ebay $50.
In the UK they sell with
    - Samsung SSD PM981 MZVLB512HAJQ, 512GB link
    * because Samsung is more expensive, approx. $80

    ps
    I asked

    i.e. what board, cpu

    * no. the ones you gave mean nothing to me

There's just so little memory there...
Here's another drive compatible with what the Crucial T480 configurator advises:
    https://www.morele.net/ssd-disk-samsung-970-evo-2tb-m-2-pci-e-nvme-mz-v7e2t0e-5521223/
    On MLC bones.
On Alle ... without a guarantee for PLN 1300, with a guarantee for PLN 2064 ... Configurators of SSD manufacturers suggest that it will fit ...
As for SATA3, the forums say that you need to use an adapter, but that the SATA line is slow and that they advise against it.
As for the configuration, I will paste it in a moment, in Thinkpads you enter the serial number on the page and the configuration is displayed. I'll paste it soon.

After much consideration and questions on the Lenovo forum, I am buying a Samsung 1TB 970 PRO.
    Here's why.
    - In the main hard drive slot, you can install a Sata 3 or PCIe drive, but the PCIe interface is much faster than Sata 3 even if it is x2, not x4
    - Because it will be a system disk and I plan to use the laptop intensively for at least 2 years - that is, every day for 12 hours, I wanted a disk with MLC chips, because they allow for a much larger number of writes than TLC disks - it is true that TLC chips are getting better and better, but on the laptop I will perform important calculations and store very important data, which is why I prefer MLC, after all, it will also have the operating system and system swap,
    - The prices of 1 TB or 2 TB drives in stores with a guarantee are very high, and on Allegro I managed to find a 970 PRO drive for PLN 900 - it is new, has a boot guarantee, the same 1 TB drive costs PLN 1,500 in the store
    - the second choice was the su900 2 TB drive for PLN 1,500, but the price knocked me out, I already thought PLN 900 was a very high price
When installing the disk into the main slot (m.2 2280) I will check if I have a free WWAN slot. If it is empty, I will buy a 2242 m.2 256 GB drive and back up my data there.
It's always better to buy the drive in the store and I'm taking a lot of risks, but the drive is brand new and costs close to half the retail price. For now, I'll put in a tiny 250 GB flash drive and use it to back up my data. It barely sticks out of the usb socket.

Finally, in the T480 I have a Samsung 970 Pro 1TB drive, and as an additional 512GB 2242 drive, probably from WD.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around upgrading the storage of a Lenovo ThinkPad T480, specifically whether to add a second SSD or replace the existing primary SSD. The user currently has a 256 GB SSD and is considering either an M.2 2242 NVMe SSD for the LTE modem slot or replacing the primary M.2 2280 SSD with a larger capacity drive. Various options are explored, including the compatibility of different SSD types, such as SATA3 and NVMe, and the performance implications of using MLC versus TLC NAND chips. Recommendations include the Samsung 970 EVO Plus and 970 PRO for their reliability and performance, with considerations for price and warranty. The user ultimately decides to install a Samsung 970 PRO 1TB as the primary drive and a 512GB 2242 NVMe drive as an additional storage option.
