Hello. To combat water shortages, I start collecting rainwater. I have a request, especially to "chemists". I have a 1000L Mauser tank, but the sticker on it says that there was a Rodine XL 1110 agent in there. I was looking for information about it and it is generally some sort of pickling agent. It has the inscription "corrosive" and the marking "Corrosive". What to rinse it with to be able to safely store rainwater that can be watered vegetables. Thank you and please help.

I do not know. I know from the net that it's some kind of corrosion inhibitor when etching metal. But there are many kinds of these Rodines. There is no information on Polish pages, I translated something from foreign pages. I have no contact with the person or company that uses such chemicals.

Is there a little of it left or is the tank empty? If it was left, you can check if it is well soluble in water.
I think it is enough to wash the tank well with water with the addition of detergent and rinse it several times with clean water.

Take a sample from the inside and try to dissolve it in any liquid, starting with the cheapest one for you.
When it has dried, the shells can be broken by hitting the walls of the canister, the rest with a pressure washer - put the lance inside.
When dried, it does not dissolve in anything, leave a piece in water and observe. If nothing changes, the water for your grass should be safe too. No guarantee of course.

I haven't written before due to lack of time. Today I'm getting the hang of it. The tank is generally clean and dry, it looks like it has been rinsed because there are no deposits. The smell is so plastic, you can't feel anything except the smell (probably only) of the tank. I will. I spray with Dimera solution (alkaline agent).

I wash it with a pressure washer. This year I will only water the grass and next year the vegetables. Maybe that's enough.
Can such chemistry eat into the plastic and release it for a long time?

In trace amounts, yes, but probably more chemicals will fall from the roof with rainwater than will be released from the walls of this tank.

If it's corrosive, it may have been a strong acid or base. The advantage of this is that one neutralizes the other. Maybe a vinegar rinse first, then water, then calcium hydroxide ( slaked lime ) and again water ...

It's hard to disagree with this, because the water that I collected into the barrel from the roof on which the chimney is located is unlikely to be suitable for watering. It's the first rain we've seen since the end of winter, and it washed the roof clean. The water was black, I poured new water and it is clean.

Thanks gentlemen for the advice, in the coming days I will implement it, it will not work right away because the business starts to develop after the downtime, you have to move to earn something. Thanks again.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the safe cleaning of a 1000L Mauser tank that previously contained Rodine XL 1110, a corrosive pickling agent. The user seeks advice on how to prepare the tank for storing rainwater suitable for watering vegetables. Responses suggest checking for residual chemicals, rinsing the tank with water and detergent, and using a pressure washer. Some recommend a vinegar rinse followed by calcium hydroxide to neutralize any remaining corrosive substances. The user notes that the tank appears clean and plans to use it for watering grass initially. Concerns about potential chemical leaching from the tank's plastic are addressed, with suggestions that rainwater may introduce more contaminants than the tank itself. Additionally, it is advised to cover the tank to prevent algae growth.
