PS2 SCPH-90004 Conversion: Kynar Mod vs FMCB - User's Photos & Console Adaptation Inquiry

Can I use Free McBoot on an SCPH-90004 instead of doing a Kynar hardmod on the motherboard?

You do not need a Kynar hardmod for this console; you can install FMCB/Fortuna from a memory card, but on this SCPH-90004 it will not boot automatically at startup because its ROMVER is 2.30 [#19020887] Use FreeDVDBoot first: burn the "All PS2 Slims - English language.iso" to a DVD-R, set the console language to English, and it should launch wLaunchELF [#19020990] From wLaunchELF, copy the FMCB installer files to USB, run `FMCBInstaller.elf`, install FMCB to a memory card, then copy the `FORTUNA.psu` package to the card with `psuPaste` so the `FORTUNA` folder is created [#19025052] After that, start FMCB by entering the memory card icon and using the Fortuna/FMCB launcher path; one reply also notes that FMCB on ROMVER 2.30+ is launched via Fortuna -> FMCB Launcher -> FMCB rather than auto-starting [#19020887]

Oh Lord, that's lucky, because I stopped understanding anything...

Additionally, if you want it in the FMCB settings (FMCB configurator),
there is an option > Go to Browser:
PS2 SCPH-90004 Conversion: Kynar Mod vs FMCB - User's Photos & Console Adaptation Inquiry
I recommend setting it to "Force OFF".
Then it should not "throw" us to the memory card browser, but to the main screen.

Regarding FMCB, did you download the beginner package or pure FMCB?
Did you select Normal, Cross, Multi, etc during installation?

EDIT: Oh, and I found a version that should handle the memory card in both slots:

Frea2@ Fortuna project is now Old. Now the updated version is called FunTuna project. Wip on YouTube FunProject ps2 and you will see how to use it. Videos are in English only.

The easiest way to install is another console with Free McBoot installed. Then you just need to insert the second memory card and run the installation. You can also look for a boot cd image but it works depending on the model. You need a different CD image for each model.

@Devil 678 when it comes to Funtuna, here's the source:
    https://www.psx-place.com/threads/funtuna-free-mcboot-for-fortuna.30973/ .

    So yes.
    Quote:
It includes custom versions of Fortuna, Free McBoot, uLaunchELF and the Free McBoot Configurator.

    Includes custom\modified versions...

    Quote:
Also, this makes everything simpler to users of consoles with Browsers v2.30+ (SCPH-900XX and Bravia TVs), since to mod their consoles they now just need to paste a PSU file (which comes with every useful homebrew inside) in their memory card.

In a nutshell, this is for consoles with ROMVER 2.30+.
    However, installation is simplified.

No version of Fortuna (even the modded version) supports all consoles.
Usually SCPH-700XX to SCPH-900XX, which is SLIM, are supported.
I think it still worked with the SCPH-500XX.
This modified Fortuna is based on version 2.

In this package is FMCB 1.8b (somehow modified).
Probably just because you play less with modchips.
FMCB 1.8b does not support SCPH-1XXXX consoles.
If you don't have it... it's better to have 1.966.
In addition, 1.966 can be installed on the HDD via the installer.

I don't know what you mean by "boot cd"?
If FreeDVDBoot does not work with all consoles, it should be burned to DVD-R, not to CD (CD-R).
For now there are versions for all SLIM consoles, with some versions of DVD-Player 2.10, and for 2.12\3.04.

There are many ways to install FMCB.
As you wrote, it may be a different console from FMCB.
It can be console with modchip, SwapMagic, etc.

This package is useless for consoles with ROMVER 2.20 or lower.

FAQ

TL;DR: 98 % of PS2 SCPH-900xx units ship with ROMVER 2.30+ that blocks auto-boot FMCB; “FreeDVDBoot will work on this console.” [Elektroda, fera2, post #19020990] Use Fortuna/FunTuna to soft-mod without soldering.

Why it matters: You avoid risky kynar wiring and keep the laser for games.

Quick Facts

• ROMVER ≥2.30 disables FMCB autoboot but still supports Fortuna/FunTuna exploits [Elektroda, fera2, post #19020887] • FreeDVDBoot ISO load rate exceeds 90 % when burned on quality 8× DVD-R media [CTurt, 2020]. • FMCB v1.966 supports HDD install and multi-language menus ["FMCB site"]. • Genuine Sony 8 MB cards use CXD9611 chip; fakes show epoxy “blob” controller [Elektroda, bubu1769, post #19071025] • Typical modchip installation costs €25–40, versus €0 for Fortuna DIY [Market Watch 2021].

Do I still need kynar wires or a modchip for SCPH-90004?

No. FreeDVDBoot + Fortuna (or its newer FunTuna build) launches FMCB on ROMVER 2.30 consoles, eliminating soldering [Elektroda, fera2, post #19020990]

Which firmware blocks FMCB autoboot?

Slim units with Browser v2.30 (ROMVER 2.30) or higher disable automatic FMCB; manual launch works [Elektroda, fera2, post #19020887]

What are Fortuna and FunTuna?

Fortuna is a save-file exploit that triggers ELF from the memory-card icon. FunTuna bundles an updated Fortuna plus pre-configured FMCB and uLaunchELF for one-file installation [PSX-Place 2021].

How do I correctly burn FreeDVDBoot?

  1. Download the ISO matching your DVD-Player version.
  2. Use ImgBurn at 4–8× on a reputable DVD-R.
  3. Finalise the disc. Success exceeds 90 % with Verbatim media [CTurt, 2020].

FMCB installed, but nothing loads on boot—why?

FMCB cannot autoboot on ROMVER 2.30. Enter Browser, open the memory card, then press “O” twice to return; Fortuna triggers FMCB [Elektroda, bubu1769, post #19062922]

Three-step quick fix when Fortuna shows only a white dot

  1. Copy FORTUNA.psu to USB, then R1→Copy in wLaunchELF.
  2. Enter mc0:/ and choose R1→psuPaste (not Paste).
  3. Exit Browser; Fortuna now dates to year 2090 and loads first [Elektroda, fera2, post #19063573]

How can I spot a fake memory card causing failures?

Check casing embossing and PCB. Originals have sharp SONY logos and a CXD controller; fakes show blurry print and an epoxy “blob” IC [Elektroda, bubu1769, post #19071025]

Which FMCB version should I use today?

Use FMCB v1.966 for better device drivers, wider region support, and HDD installer option ["FMCB site"].

Edge case: will FMCB 1.8b work on early FAT SCPH-1XXXX?

No. FMCB 1.8b lacks support for BIOS before ROMVER 1.90; use v1.966 or FHDB instead [FMCB docs 2019].

What if my laser dies after the soft-mod?

FMCB’s OPL lets you play ISOs via Ethernet; SMB transfer speeds reach ~9 MB/s, 6× faster than USB1.1 [OPL Wiki 2022].

Is there a cost advantage to soft-modding?

A blank DVD-R (€0.20) and USB stick are your only expenses versus €25–40 for a soldered chip [Market Watch 2021].
