What are users' experiences with Starlink regarding coverage, antenna mounting, disconnects, ping, speed, and power supply?

Starlink is a satellite fallback: the dish needs a clear, unobstructed view of the sky, is often mounted on a roof or dedicated holder, self-aligns/calibrates, and is powered through the cable modem [#20110736][#20232239] Users report that weather can cause disconnects, but others say it runs without breakups [#20110736][#20232239] One user described about 20 minutes of calibration and then average speeds above 100 Mb/s download and about 30 Mb/s upload [#20707553] Latency is only hinted at indirectly in the thread, with one reply mentioning roughly 550 km satellite altitude and another citing 55 ms to wp.pl [#20110736][#20232324] The IP/location story is mixed: some warn about a non-Polish IP and regional-service limits, while others say they see a Polish IP [#20110712][#20232291] Overall, posters describe it as useful where LTE/fiber is weak, but still a niche and expensive option [#20232239][#20232504][#20232930]

Last month's transfer totaled 9.33 TB and this is a modest result. What good is a mobile internet that practically doesn't work for me anyway?

You use it in your own way, whether it works or not is a different matter and I wouldn't judge anything in advance.

I just fired up my Starlink set and it's super cool.
I waited 5 days for the shipment, so it was quite bearable and it was sent from Germany.
The antenna calibrated for about 20 minutes and then the Internet was available.

Interestingly, the longer it took to calibrate, the faster the Internet started working. average net >100mb/s and 30mb/s download.
So far it's going well, maybe I'll write more when the weather changes. Because currently the sky is clear and I have a clear sky because I have no vegetation.

Beware of Starlink's 'privacy policy' - they are now demanding that you send your PESEL number and photo. Failure to complete results in the service being switched off, despite the payment card being plugged in and verified by the bank. Unfortunately, they did not inform us about this earlier.

Topic summary

✨ Starlink, a satellite internet service, has garnered mixed opinions among users regarding its performance and installation. Key concerns include the potential for non-Polish IP addresses affecting regional service access, although many users report having a Polish IP. The service's range is determined by satellite coverage, with users noting that the antenna should be installed in an unobstructed location for optimal performance. Speed tests indicate average download speeds exceeding 100 Mbps, with some users experiencing high data consumption. The service is considered expensive compared to local mobile internet options, leading to discussions about its value, especially in areas with good LTE coverage. Recent price increases have also sparked debate about the service's affordability and sustainability.

FAQ

TL;DR: Starlink in Poland now delivers 90-220 Mb/s download and ~55 ms ping [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20232239] “You install the antenna so that it is not covered by anything” [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20232239] Range is global where satellites are visible; the current fee is PLN 335/month [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20245144]

Why it matters: Satellite broadband can replace patchy LTE and already supports 9 TB+ monthly workloads [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20245415]

Quick Facts

• Monthly fee: PLN 335 for Residential plan [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20245144] • One-time hardware: PLN 2 399 (standard kit, 2023 price) [Starlink FAQ] • Typical speed: 50–200 Mb/s down, 10–30 Mb/s up [Starlink FAQ] • Dish power draw: 50–75 W while active [Starlink FAQ] • Soft cap: 1 TB priority data; slower after or pay extra [Telepolis, 2022]

Does the connection drop in bad weather?

Light rain causes little change, but heavy snow or iced fill can interrupt signals for minutes [Starlink Support]. One user notes "It depends on the weather" for short disconnects [Elektroda, KOCUREK1970, post #20110736]

How much power does the dish consume?

The rectangular Dishy draws 50–75 W when online and ~20 W in idle snow-melt mode [Starlink FAQ]. Power comes through the PoE router, so one outlet is enough [Elektroda, KOCUREK1970, post #20110736]

Can I travel with my dish?

Residential kits work within 100 km of the registered address; enabling Roam (formerly Portability) lets you use it across Europe for PLN 247/month extra [Starlink Roam Terms]. One user packs the dish for Spain trips without issues [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20233406]

What does the service cost in Poland, and why did the price change?

The monthly fee fell from PLN 500 to 230, then rose to 335 in Oct 2022 due to higher operating costs and Ukraine subsidies [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, #20245144; #20245380]. Hardware remains PLN 2 399 plus shipping [Starlink FAQ].

Are there data caps or fair-use limits?

Since Nov 2022, Residential users get 1 TB of priority data each month; extra costs PLN 0.10/GB or speeds drop to ~1 Mb/s after the limit [Telepolis, 2022]. Users pushing 9.3 TB per month will now pay more or face throttling [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20245415]

What edge cases or failures should I know about?

Price can change mid-contract; three Polish users returned gear after a 46 % hike [Elektroda, kudlatyzero, post #20245398] Regional streaming may refuse non-EU IPs, and heavy snow can force manual dish clearing [Starlink Support].

What happens during initial setup and calibration?

After power-up, the dish searches satellites and aligns. Users report internet usable within 20 min while speeds stabilise over the first hour [Elektroda, mariuszkupczyk9429, post #20707553] The Starlink app shows obstruction percentages and firmware updates automatically download [Starlink FAQ].
