In the dc analysis of some MOSFET circuits, quadratic equations in gate-to-
source voltage are developed. How can we determine which of the two possible
solutions is the correct one?

Hi Chan,

You can try substituting the values to the equation. If it satisfies the equation, that is the correct value.

or you can just solve it by observation within the given values if it is logical to have that value.

Hi Mani!

It depends on where your MOSFET is operating, whether it is operating in the Active region, Saturation or Cut-off. By knowing that, you could then refer to the Characteristic curve of the MOSFET (a D-MOSFET or E-MOSFET) and have an idea of the value of your Vgs. Never forget Shockley's Equation as it can be very useful when analyzing the values of your Vgs, Id, and V(pinchoff).
