I want to design a Arc welder based on the king of random design with some variation to make it safer Basic preliminary design Two mot hooked up to out of phase 120v 20A breakers with extra breakers on the actual welder Mots secondary rewound with 16-22 turns 8 awg wire either stripped and recovered with Teflon tape or with the current thick insulation Fan from a convection oven (120v 60hz ac) for cooling Cheap grounding clamp Electrode holder Two pairs locking pliers to hold carbon electrodes with 1)holes drilled for lugs or other wire attaching idea or 2) screw tightening pipe strap things to hold wire on Steel pipe with cover for bottom 1.5 " to 2.5" - depends on price - for aluminum crucible And the main feature I am questioning is the king of random scariac because it seems foolishly risky (as opposed to the entire project which is risky but not foolishly so ) I came up with an idea to replace a variac with a dimmer switch on each input - amperage control - coupled with taps into each of the secondary coils at different intervals to create many different levels of Voltage Obvious safety equipment: welding glasses/mask, welding gloves, thick full coverage shirt and pants 2000 F fire bricks under all work areas (outdoors BTW) water nearby, people far away
thank you
