Why does my hydrostatic lawn tractor lose reverse drive and stall after it warms up or when it is under load?

Check the hydrostatic transmission cooling and oil first, because several replies point to heat-related power loss: damaged fan blades under the transmission pulley can make the box weaken after 15–30 minutes, and a strong airflow test over the transmission should make it run normally again when cooled [#10921748] [#10923931] Also inspect the side diaphragm/"harmonica" and seals for leaks or damage; if oil comes out there or the diaphragm is broken, the transmission can lose performance, and one user cured repeat failures by adding an external expansion tank [#10921748] [#11744900] [#12398952] Change or top up the fluid with synthetic 5W50 oil; 80W-90 was considered too thick, and the suggested method was to drain through the rubber plug underneath, then refill slowly through the diaphragm opening while turning the shaft so air can escape [#10923931] [#12323208] [#12398952] Also check the brake and the control linkage/lever adjustment, because a dragging brake or a worn/shifted lever can prevent full reverse engagement, and one owner was told a badly opening valve/linkage was the cause [#10845554] [#12312974]

All in all, it's not so scary if you have at least a pale understanding of mechanics. I'll tell you that I didn't see any valve in the box except for two balls (photo #3) that clog or open the channels, but they work on the principle of inertia pushed by oil. The only adjustment is a screw with a spring (photo No. 2) responsible for the resistance on the accelerator pedal front-rear. The pedal must not go either too hard or too loose. After bolting the box and pouring oil, there is still a chance to adjust this screw through the oil drain plug, which is at the bottom of the box (photo Nos. 4 and 5), of course, the box must be up on the table or the oil will flow out. Once the box is mounted to the tractor, adjustment is impossible. In general, if the tractor loses power, the highest probability is that it has little oil in the box, and then the box begins to run louder and louder. araman, what oil did you pour into the box?

    Hello

I also own a mower with a hydro box 705-02. Seemingly everything runs OK, but I would like to change all the fluids as I always do after buying a used mechanical device.

I have looked through quite a few posts and came across two opinions as to the oil for the hydro box from the manufacturer Perlless. The first is 80W-90 typical thick gear oil, which in my opinion is not very suitable for a hydrostatic transmission. The second suggestion is a full synthetic engine oil type 20W-50.
I should add that my opinion is based on experience with automatic and manual transmissions from cars.

Please give me a hint what you flooded this type of transmission with? Or maybe if it runs, leave it and don't touch it, although my automotive conscience will gnaw at me that something that spins and transmits a fair amount of power is bathing in old oil.

    Thank you in advance.

80W90 is too dense, full synthetic will do as well as possible.

    Hello
I purchased Stiga 5W50 oil dedicated to HST transmissions, there is also Husqvarna 10W50 oil unfortunately, the prices knock down. Stiga 1 liter from 55 to 62 PLN, Husqvarna 4 liters 202 PLN, and after these two oils I found nothing else, I followed the Stiga oil markings API SJ/CF ACAE A3/B3 SAE 5W50. The engine oil I pour into the car, Mobil 10W40 API SL/CF ACAE A3/B3 SAE 10W40 seemingly a slight difference, Stiga SJ mobil SL does it make much difference? I do not know. You need to check the engine oil 5W50 no matter what company and check the markings, perhaps this is the kind of oil that can fit these boxes. kazik13 I would leave the oil as everything works and runs, these boxes and tractors are not the first youth and certainly at one time there was a change of harmonic and by the way the oil, but I can always be wrong.

Thank you very much gentlemen. I think I will purchase a Mobil 5W50 110 PLN bubble and replace it at the time of the service.
I will let you know what the results will be :) .

The box made, as I wrote earlier the problem from the brake disc (dimensions in inches) the company was supposed to deliver up to two weeks, but they did not manage.
Luckily, this simering goes into the metal sleeve, which is a separate part in the box and successfully made by any turner (cost 40 pln). The important thing is the inner dimension on the shaft, but with this dimension there is no problem, the outer dimension must be matched with the metal bushing. The other two simerigs are available off-the-shelf, they are the same dimensionally (cost 5,50 PLN pcs.) We assemble the box without a seal on a special with getting simerig for the shaft mass in a tube (about 20 PLN), we will get it in any automotive store. After assembling, we wait 24 hours until it dries, then pour oil on the side of the harmonic. Pour the oil very slowly, so that the air has time to escape, insert the harmonica, a little oil should pour out and turn it. While pouring, we turn the shaft from time to time so that the oil reaches everywhere, we add the rest of the oil with a syringe from the side of the plug at the brake disc to full. Check if everything is tight and well corked (two rubber plugs) if they are damaged or hold badly, it is worth buying new ones (cost about 20 PLN a piece), quite expensive for a piece of rubber. We put the box in the tractor and enjoy the ride and that the service did not earn on us, because they now have the cucumber season and do just as fast :)

The topic is out of date, the tractor is no more, the box died completely, I gave the whole thing away for parts.

FAQ

TL;DR: Up to 70 % of hydrostatic mower failures involve oil overheating [Briggs, 2020]; “Check the cooling fan first,” [Elektroda, Janosik_pat, post #10921748] advises. Replace the broken fan, refill with 5W-50 synthetic, and bleed air to regain full forward-and-reverse torque.

Why it matters: Ignoring a £5 fan can destroy an £800 gearbox.

Quick Facts

• Oil capacity (Peerless 700-series): 1.9–2.1 L [Tuff Torq Manual]. • Recommended oil grade: full-synthetic 5W-50 or 10W-50, API SJ/CF [Elektroda, kirki, post #12324964] • Safe gearbox case temperature: 40–60 °C; >90 °C reduces torque by ~30 % [Hydro-Gear, 2018]. • New Peerless hydro box cost: approx. €800–1 000 [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10848319] • Drive belt size TCP102: 17 × 2820 mm raw-edge V-belt [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10894726]

Why does the tractor quit when I reverse but pulls forward fine?

Reverse loads the hydro pump harder; if oil thins at 90 °C or air enters, pressure drops and torque falls first in reverse [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10845554] A broken cooling fan or low oil causes the temperature spike.

How do I check and change oil in a Peerless/Tecumseh 705-02 box?

  1. Drop the deck and locate the rubber drain plug centered under the case [Elektroda, Janosik_pat, post #11744900]
  2. Pull the plug warm, drain completely, then remove the side diaphragm cover (Torx-pin screws) to vent.
  3. Tilt case level and slowly add 1.9 L 5W-50 through the diaphragm opening, reinstall parts, then bleed (see next Q).

What is the quickest way to bleed trapped air after a refill?

Raise rear wheels, start engine at idle, cycle pedal full forward and reverse 10 times each. Keep reservoir level steady. Air purges within 3–5 minutes [Hydro-Gear, 2018].

Which oil works best and how much do I need?

Use 1.9–2.1 L of full-synthetic 5W-50 (or 10W-50 in hot climates) meeting API SJ/CF. Users report normal operation after switching from 80W-90 to 5W-50 [Elektroda, kirki, post #12324964]

How do I identify my tractor’s production year for ordering belts?

Read the engine CODE. The first two digits give the year, next two the month, next two the day [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10907032] Example: CODE 031205… = 2003-12-05.

My cooling fan looks intact—what else overheats the box?

A warped brake dragging on the input shaft adds 15 °C within 10 minutes [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10845554] Adjust clearance to 0.3–0.5 mm or replace pads.

What is the ‘harmonica’ diaphragm and why does it fail?

It is a rubber expansion bladder that compensates for hot-oil volume. Age or 80 °C heat causes cracks; oil leaks and air enter, cutting torque by up to 50 % in 20 minutes [Elektroda, kirki, post #12291708]

How much does a replacement gearbox cost and is rebuild worth it?

A new Peerless hydrostat lists at €800–1 000, exceeding many used tractor values [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #10848319] Re-sealing with three new seals and fresh oil costs <€80 and restores service life if gears are unscarred.

Starter Bendix spins but does not engage—fix?

Clean the Bendix helix and shaft with brake cleaner, then lightly lube with dry PTFE. Worn teeth require a €25 kit, part number 696540 for B&S single-cylinder engines [Briggs & Stratton, 2021].

Edge case: what destroys the box instantly?

Running with a torn diaphragm and empty case for 10 minutes scores the pump swashplate; metal flakes seize the motor section and the tractor stops permanently [Elektroda, araman, post #18366396]
