Hello. I started the topic because I asked a question in several online stores (quite serious stores) and no one was able to answer me what and how. I have a question about PCI-e x16 and Pcie x1 compatibility. I have a Dell optiplex 790 sff computer with two PCI-e x16 slots in it and a firewire card connected. And one of the stores wrote back to me that I can connect PCI-e x1. Is it possible? Will it work? After all, these are two different things.

But X16 is backwards compatible so you can insert a 'short' PCI-E X1 card into slot X16 and it will work.

    Hello,
The PCI-E x1 card should work in the x16 slot.

There are several variants of this bus - with 1, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 or 32 lines (lanes). As the number of lines increases, the connector lengthens, its design (through a common initial part and only adding new lines at the end) allows the operation of cards slower than those that the maximum supports the slot.

Yes, it should work. The bottom PCI-E slot on your board is connected to PCI-E lanes 4 (which is PCI-E x4). The card for the SFF needs to be low profile but I can see there is a low profile herring included. In my opinion, it should work :)

This Dell is almost mine :) On Sunday, I have a pickup appointment and hence my doubts. Because if it turned out that it is not compatible with the firewall card, more than 1200 would go down the drain. The whole set is to work with the motu 896Hd card.

Calculate well if this Dell pays off for you :) You didn't provide the exact configuration so it's hard to estimate. Certainly its expansion is not easy ;)

If you live in Poland, for PLN 112 you can download such a card from the conrad.pl store (I found it there - the price is similar to ebay, and you will probably get it faster). Twice cheaper is different on morele.net, but with and without a low profile via chipset, so it's not very suitable for you.

I think it pays off. It has windows 7 pro Intel Quad Core 2400 i5 3.10Ghz 4gb ram. Two disks 250 and 160gb. The computer will only work with music processing and nothing else. I think dell is a good choice and I think it is efficient for the price.

At this price, you could be tempted to put together something similar and you could even do it, but unfortunately without the system included in the price. This computer is definitely not bad :)

Thanks for the help. I bought something like this https://www.elektroda.pl/rtvforum/faq.php - p. 3.1.18. [Mirek Z.] on Sunday I will let you know if something is burnt or if it is flashing properly. I will pray. I've been fighting firewire for over half a year on another computer: /

And I picked it up. A bit better than it was supposed to be because the Optiplex 7010 with the i5 3550 processor :) But not about that. There was a problem. I connected the firewire card and almost everything was fine except the drivers for the universal serial bus (usb) controller (not installed). the card has an additional power supply, but I do not have an adapter for this power supply yet and I cannot connect. What's with these controls? I can't find them anywhere.

Provide the exact version of the system and the device ID from the device manager.

Windows 7 Profesional 64 bit sp1. firewire to Lycom PE-101 chipset TI is installed in the system as IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers, but Universal serial bus (usb) controller is not installed. When I connect the audio interface to all this, it detects it, but I can't start the sound because the screen freezes.

    Did I get something wrong?

Added after 2 [hours] 36 [minutes]:

I was able to update the Universal serial bus (usb) controller, but I have another problem. I connect the motu 896hd or m-audio 1814 interface and when I set it as the default device, the screen freezes and I can not do anything. HELP

Topic summary

The discussion centers around the compatibility of PCI-e x1 cards with PCI-e x16 slots in a Dell Optiplex 790 SFF. Users confirm that PCI-e x1 cards can be inserted into x16 slots due to backward compatibility, and they discuss the potential purchase of a low-profile Firewire card (Lycom PE-101) for this system. Concerns about driver installation for USB controllers and issues with audio interfaces (MOTU 896HD and M-Audio 1814) are also raised, particularly regarding system freezes when setting these devices as default. The conversation highlights the importance of ensuring proper power supply connections for the cards and the need for compatible drivers.
