Hi. Today I started the car and noticed that when pressing the clutch (lightly and all the way down) I can hear a knocking sound from the engine side. I would like to add that on a warmed up car this also happens. The sounds can only be heard outside. It is not any rasp just a characteristic knocking sound. Does anyone know what this could be?

Quickly pull out the box, a broken pressure plate damages its housing. A common fault.

So this is not a typical symptom of a dual mass wheel but a pressure plate?

I have already written to you. A little more and you will see oil under the car. And you'll be looking for the box....

Hi. I wanted to get back to the topic because I replaced the pressure plate, the clutch complete, and I can still hear the knocking, except that it stopped when I push the clutch pedal all the way in. Now only the knocking can be heard when I press the clutch halfway. I will also add that it slightly jerks in 1st and 2nd gear at 1500-2000 rpm.
When pressing the clutch while driving, you can feel the vibration (All this was also before the replacement).

    Hello
Are you replacing the clutch thrust bearing? Take a look at the cushions under the transmission and engine I had similar symptoms with dead cushions in my fiat.

I replaced the thrust bearing and I can't figure out where the knocking on the half clutch is coming from. Isn't it something with the transmission? I can feel the friction on the clutch pedal, and the knocking can be heard from the engine side, well, and that vibration while driving.

    Probably cushions to be replaced.

What does knocking at half clutch , at idle have to do with the cushions?

After all, you wrote yourself that in first and second gear it jerks you around.

It jerks when accelerating , and knocks at a standstill at idle with the clutch half depressed. So these could be two different problems.

Buddy could you zoom in on where the sound arises? From what you say nothing. When does this sound arise, whether when you press the pedal hard or when you press the pedal lightly or no change. What I mean is whether the fluid pressure in the clutch has any effect on it.

The sound can only be heard outside, I can't tell from where it's coming because it's spreading through the engine (I mean knocking). It starts when I press the clutch gently, it stops knocking when I press the pedal all the way in. When I start or reverse by letting go of the clutch the knocking is louder and you can feel a distinct "Muffling" of the car.

It is unbelievable what you are writing about.Such a symptom MAY be caused by play on the crankshaft shims, but in 1.9tdi I have not yet encountered this.Taking into account the transmission no play will cause a decrease in engine power.I had such a sound in a sprinter which had damaged injectors and dual mass wheel as a result of which the crankshaft in it broke. The symptoms were the same. However, I am in favor of starting with the most trivial causes such as a loose clutch supply line or undercranked clutch pump. For a deeper diagnosis, I recommend removing the plate under the engine and listen to the problem with the help of a second person.

Unfortunately I will have to go to the mechanic again. The situation requires that I have to drive this car abroad therefore every little thing irritates me. Thank you gentlemen for your help

Hi. I am refreshing the topic because it turned out to be the transmission. I am looking for a new transmission for now but the mechanic suggested to drive around and see if the knocking goes away after some time (after replacing the clutch, dual mass, pressure plate etc . He explained that maybe the synchronizers in the transmission will improve. I don't know but was he right? So far I drive and it is knocking .

After a few years or maybe I can :D Mate I have the same problem.... Did it settle in the box or did it fall apart? Or was it something else after all?

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around a knocking sound from the engine of a VW Passat B6 1.9 TDI when the clutch is pressed. The user initially reports the sound occurring both when the clutch is lightly pressed and fully depressed, with the noise being audible only from outside the vehicle. Responses suggest that the issue may stem from a broken pressure plate, worn transmission cushions, or problems with the dual mass flywheel. After replacing the pressure plate and clutch, the knocking persists, particularly when the clutch is pressed halfway, accompanied by vibrations and jerking in lower gears. Further suggestions include checking the clutch thrust bearing, transmission components, and potential crankshaft play. The user ultimately concludes that the transmission may be the source of the problem and is considering further mechanical evaluation.
