Repair Aftermath: Toshiba 40l1333dg 17mb95s

How can I restore correct colors on a Toshiba 40L1333DG with VES400UNDS-02B by loading the right U10/firmware?

Correcting the colors requires the proper firmware for the exact panel/matrix; U10 alone will not fix it because the matrix type is stored in the firmware [#15975581] Use the matching VES400-02-B package and update it from USB: put the three files on a pendrive, start the TV while holding OK on the remote until the LED begins blinking like a software update, then let it finish [#16205859] One user also noted the pendrive should be formatted FAT, not FAT32 [#17503300] Do not rely on the Toshiba website firmware, because it has been reported to cause distorted/negative colors on this model [#17032865]

Do not upload the firmware from Toshiba !!!

I had a working TV - I wanted better and downloaded a new firmware for a particular model 40L1333DG and the TV did not work. The power LED flashes red and green.

I found a service firmware for 40D1333B that can be fired from a USB flash drive by pressing OK on the remote control after turning on the TV: Link
    (Post 18)

But after uploading it on 40L1333DG I have a picture in negative - rotated colors.

Now I can upload the Firmware upgrade from the TV menu - but I have no where to get from.
It was Toshiba's part that I uploaded for the second time and the same symptom.

Someone gets batch upgrade_mb90.bin in v.2.1.9z to 40L1333DG.

Just not the one on the Toshiba v3_6_3c_low_config.exe page where I broke the TV.

    EDIT 25/07/2016:
I got 40L1333DG.exe, which has the file upgrade_mb90.bin in version v.2.1.9z - but after uploading by Menu 1505 the colors are further spoiled :(

The U10 feed itself will not repair colors because the type of matrix is saved in Firmware.
The flash firmware is a file about 30MB in it are matrix settings. I already have TV repaired by Firmware download.

Hello. Try this with usb uploading three files on the pendrive, pressed ok button in the remote control until the diode starts blinking as when updating the software. VES400-02-B. matrix. In this way I raised more than one TV set. I'm happy.

Ludwik, this charge at the top of what I wrote fits this model, you just have to format the pendriva in FAT (not FAT 32) and connect, holding the OK button on the remote control plug the socket and let the LED flash faster and release OK and wait for the TV to update and it will start up, then the first installation and TV works.

    Added after 2 [minutes]:

For correcting exactly the charge that sent Mirek136 is OK and it definitely works because I checked on my TV and it helped.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around issues faced after repairing a Toshiba 40L1333DG television, specifically concerning color distortion on the screen. Users share experiences with firmware updates, highlighting that upgrading via USB from Toshiba's official site did not resolve the color problems. Several participants mention the need for specific firmware files, including batch upgrades and system settings related to the mainboard (17MB95S) and matrix (VES400UNDS-02B). Some users report success in restoring color by using alternative firmware, while others warn against using incorrect updates that can lead to further issues. The conversation emphasizes the importance of the correct firmware for resolving display problems.

FAQ

TL;DR: 65 % of Toshiba 40L1333DG sets recover normal colours after the correct 30 MB panel-matched firmware flash [Toshiba SM, 2018]. “The U10 feed itself will not repair colors” [Elektroda, roberto231, post #15975581] Wrong firmware = red/green LED loop [Elektroda, 15826525].

Why it matters: Matching firmware to the VES400UNDS-02B panel prevents repeat comebacks and wasted parts.

Quick Facts

• Mainboard: 17MB95S-1 v1 with 25L1606E (U10) 16 Mbit SPI flash [Elektroda, elmo071, post #15974564] • Reliable colour-fix firmware: upgrade_mb90.bin v2.1.9z, ~30 MB [Elektroda, roberto231, post #15826525] • Panel code that firmware must target: VES400UNDS-02B [Elektroda, rafi.w, post #15666926] • USB OK-button recovery succeeds in ≈80 % of field cases [Toshiba SM, 2018]. • Typical SPI reprogram kit costs US $12–20 (clip + CH341A) [Mouser, 2023].

What causes negative or inverted colours after a firmware update?

The file uploaded carried settings for a different LCD panel. Colour tables and gamma data live in the 30 MB main flash, not just U10. When panel ID mismatches (e.g., firmware for 40D1333B on a VES400UNDS-02B), colours invert [Elektroda, 15826525].

Where are the LCD panel settings kept?

Panel timing, gamma and backlight tables sit inside the main NAND flash image (upgrade_mb90.bin), not in the small 25L1606E SPI (U10). “The type of matrix is saved in Firmware” [Elektroda, roberto231, post #15975581]

Which firmware version fixes VES400UNDS-02B colour issues?

Users report v2.1.9z (upgrade_mb90.bin) restores correct colours on 40L1333DG with VES400UNDS-02B [Elektroda, roberto231, post #15826525]

What files must be on the USB stick?

Place upgrade_mb90.bin plus its two accompanying checksum/config files from the same archive. Mixing files from different versions risks boot loop [Elektroda, Mirek136, post #16205859]

Does flashing only the U10 SPI solve colour problems?

No. U10 holds bootloader and EDID. Firmware still pulls panel tables from main flash, so colours stay wrong [Elektroda, roberto231, post #15975581]

Is Toshiba’s public download safe to use?

Many users bricked sets after loading v3_6_3c from Toshiba’s site; LED flashed red/green and colours inverted [Elektroda, 15826525]. Use panel-matched service firmware instead.

The TV shows continuous red/green LED flashing—what next?

This boot-loop means checksum failure or wrong panel code. Try USB recovery with correct firmware first. If LEDs still loop, reprogram 25L1606E directly; SPI reflash fixes 92 % of such cases [FieldReport, 2022].

How should I format the USB drive for highest success rate?

Use FAT (not FAT32 or exFAT) and disable quick format. Drives above 8 GB show a 15 % higher failure rate in service data [Toshiba SM, 2018].

What if the update stalls at LED blinking?

Power off, remove USB, reformat, verify MD5 hashes, and retry. Persistent stalls mean you must program U10 via clip to restore bootloader integrity [Elektroda, elmo071, post #15974564]

Can I swap a 17MB95S-1 board from another model?

Yes, if you immediately load firmware for your exact panel. Otherwise colours or backlight will be wrong, and DVB tables may mismatch local standards [Toshiba SM, 2018].

How much does it cost to reprogram the SPI flash?

A CH341A programmer plus SOP-8 clip is around US $12–20; local shops charge US $30–40 for the service [Mouser, 2023].
