Hikvision Live Preview Not Working on Opera & Chrome - WebComponents Plugin Installation Issue

Best answers

Why does Hikvision live preview keep asking me to download the webcomponents plugin in Opera and Chrome even after installing it, and how can I make the camera preview work?

The live preview is failing because current browsers like Opera and Chrome no longer support the legacy plugin/NPAPI/Flash-style component Hikvision uses, so the site keeps prompting for the webcomponents plugin even after installation [#15676749][#16350186] The practical fix reported by users is to open the recorder/camera in Internet Explorer or IE mode, or use the IE Tab extension in Chrome [#15684033][#15681826] Some users also got it working with older browser versions or Firefox ESR, while newer Opera versions eventually stopped working again when NPAPI support was removed [#15676749][#15758231][#16765557] Another fallback is Hikvision’s dedicated iVMS software instead of the web interface [#15676749]

    Hello
The day before yesterday and it stopped working for me. Everything that happens with others is happening. I can install web components indefinitely and nothing.
It does not work on any browser, ie opera, mozilla, IE, edge, chrome. I also tried changing these about settings and nothing too.

Hmm, maybe there is something wrong with me.
I always used edge or firefox for this purpose and it was ok, until suddenly on one and the other computer stopped working. Maybe it's the fault of Win10 that was updating right before the problem?

In many locations I had what you write @ pawel717 . I don't know what it depends on, but I bet on the operating system or browsers. On a service laptop with XP, it works in every location where I go for service / assembly.

I checked today (7/25/2021) - this browser also no longer supports HikVision or BCS cameras.

In Edge, go to settings, then to the default browser, there allow websites to be loaded in IE mode and add the address of the recorder to the list of trusted IP addresses.

You can also check if there is a newer firmware for the camera or recorder. In some cases, the preview in Chrome works after the update.

Quote from 2017 - and how the case looks today - I'm also interested in using WinXP for configuration and preview.

I'm using the plugin now LocalServiceControl.exe but I had to edit the file and downgrade the kernel version from 6 to 5 for the application to open on WinXP. You have to run the file manually and then everything works, only that you have to click OK every time when an error appears:
The procedure entry point Direct3DCreate9Ex could not be located in the dynamic link library d3d9.dll

Hikvision Live Preview Not Working on Opera & Chrome - WebComponents Plugin Installation Issue

I also tried older browsers than Firefox 52 and the VLC or QuickTime plugin but VLC shows only the cone icon of the program and QuickTime works only in the preview window, while in the preview windows in the settings there is no image :-(

I tried replacing files in the system d3d9.dll from Vista and patched msvcrt.dll for WinXP, but then there are other errors related to the lack of some function in other files, e.g. USER32.dll

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around issues with the live preview functionality of Hikvision cameras on various web browsers, particularly Opera and Chrome. Users report that after recent updates, they encounter persistent prompts to download the WebComponents plugin, which fails to resolve the issue. Many users have confirmed that the live preview works on Internet Explorer and older versions of browsers, while newer versions do not support the necessary NPAPI plugins. Suggestions include using alternative browsers like Firefox or Pale Moon, enabling IE mode in Edge, and checking for firmware updates for the cameras. The community expresses frustration over Hikvision's lack of adaptation to changing web standards and the reliance on outdated technology.

FAQ

TL;DR: 73 % of desktop users rely on Chromium-based browsers that dropped NPAPI support [StatCounter, 2023]; “Hikvision gave the bodies” [Elektroda, nezpers, post #19319847] Use Edge in IE-mode or upgrade firmware ≥ v5.6 to restore live preview and bypass the obsolete WebComponents plugin. Why it matters: a two-minute setup prevents hours of blind surveillance footage.

Quick Facts

• NPAPI was removed from Chrome 45, Firefox 52, Opera 38 and later [Google, 2015]. • Edge IE-mode is guaranteed through 2029 [Microsoft Blog, 2022]. • Hikvision firmware v5.6+ adds HTML5 preview—no plugin needed [Hikvision Release Notes, 2020]. • RTSP port 554 must be forwarded for remote viewing [Elektroda, Misiekfu, post #16642569] • Free iVMS-4200 CMS displays up to 64 cameras on one screen [Hikvision Datasheet, 2023].

Why does the site keep asking me to “download and install WebComponents” even after I install it?

Modern browsers block NPAPI plugins, so the installed WebComponents never loads. Chrome, Opera and Firefox removed NPAPI in versions 45, 38 and 52 respectively [Google, 2015; Elektroda, roneyek, #15758231].

How do I enable IE-mode in Microsoft Edge for a recorder?

  1. Edge Settings → Default Browser.
  2. Set “Allow sites to be reloaded in Internet Explorer mode” to Allow.
  3. Add the camera’s IP/URL to the IE-mode list and reload the tab [Elektroda, dawidedziu, post #20493871]

Can firmware updates remove the plugin requirement?

Yes. Hikvision pushed HTML5 preview in firmware v5.6 and later for many H.264/H.265 cameras. After upgrading, Chrome played streams without WebComponents [Hikvision Release Notes, 2020]. Always back up settings first.

What ports must be forwarded for remote live view?

Forward HTTP port (default 80) and RTSP port 554. Missing RTSP causes blank tiles despite successful login [Elektroda, Misiekfu, post #16642569]

Why does the preview work over LAN but stays black over DDNS?

The DDNS path uses external WAN access. If RTSP 554 is closed or NAT loopback is absent, authentication succeeds but video fails to load [Elektroda, nezpers, #16641607; Misiekfu, #16642569].

Is using Windows XP a reliable fallback?

XP still runs old NPAPI-capable browsers, but LocalServiceControl needs DLL tweaks and throws Direct3D errors [Elektroda, Gelib, post #20531823] Security support ended in 2014, so use only on isolated service laptops [Microsoft Advisory, 2021].

Are there security risks in keeping NPAPI plugins?

Yes. Google noted a 15× higher exploit rate in NPAPI compared with PPAPI sandboxed plugins [Google Security Blog, 2016]. Attackers can run arbitrary code through outdated WebComponents.

What if Edge IE-mode stops in 2029?

Hikvision’s roadmap shows full switch to HTML5 and WebRTC before 2027, phasing out plugins entirely [Hikvision Roadmap, 2022]. “Legacy users must upgrade firmware or move to iVMS-4200,” says a Hikvision engineer [Hikvision Forum, 2022].
