I pulled an old keyboard out of the basement. I've taken it apart and cleaned it thoroughly, but the motley rubber buttons annoy me a bit. Is painting them black with universal spray paint a good idea? Will the paint chip or come off when pressed?

Much depends on the hardness of this rubber and the intensity of use. It is important to thoroughly clean / wash these keys before painting. Paint with the thinnest possible layer. So that the material is fully covered. The effect will be satisfactory for a long time.

Thank you for your help. Finally, I painted the buttons with spray paint from Obi, just to test. It took two coats but the paint seems to be holding up.
