Internet Connection Issue: DNS Error Despite Successful WiFi Connection and Troubleshooting

Best answers

Why does Windows show a DNS error and no internet access even though my Wi‑Fi/cable connection is active, and what should I check to fix it?

This is likely not a pure DNS problem but a router/modem/DHCP or ISP-side link issue; check whether the router gets a WAN IP, ping 8.8.8.8 and wp.pl, and reboot/reset the modem/router and PC/network adapter [#15910536] [#15910662] [#15911024] [#15911821] If 8.8.8.8 works but wp.pl does not, the DNS settings on the router are the next thing to check; if even the router/modem pings fail, the fault is upstream and the operator may need to inspect the line or equipment [#15911024] [#15911666] In the thread, the connection came back after another reset plus reconnecting the modem to the router and the router to the PC, with Windows initially reporting a DHCP problem that then cleared itself [#15911821] [#15914490]

    Hi,
I was surfing the net, I went to eat and I lost my internet.
I checked if the cable was loose, but no. Windows shows me a message about DNS not working. I am connected to the network but cannot access it.
I reset my modem and router and nothing. The internet provider claims that everything is fine.
I connected directly via the cable but the same. I manually set dns to google and it doesn't go either. I turned off the antivirus.

I will add that this is the first time I have had such a case. I checked if the cable is ok.
When I connect directly via cable it shows me the new network, but it is public if it has any effect. I wanted to install the modem drivers from the vectra CD, but they are already there.

I don't know what else can I do, something in the modem settings?
    Please help :)

Show all IPCONFIG / ALL because it doesn't show what is above.
And do more ping 8.8.8.8 and ping wp.pl

It looks more like the lack of internet between the router and the operator.
    Check it out ping 192.168.0.1

What router is it? What LEDs are burning on it?

    What?

You can enter the router's configuration page (http://192.168.0.1/ login and password admin ) and show full status?

You don't need to specify, so write only two starting octets from the WAN addresses, e.g .:
    ip 192.168.xxx.xxx
    mask 255.255.xx
    gateway 192.168.xx
    dns 8.8.xx

So the router gets the IP. It is possible that this "old man" is damaged and does not transmit the Internet.

You can try to reset the router with the button on the back. If that doesn't work, technicians may need to be called in.

I tried to reset but it didn't help.
The router is probably from 2008.
But why can't I connect directly via cable?
    Thanks for the help :)

The operator uses filtering by MAC address.
Try to connect the cable directly to turn off / on the modem from vectra. If it still doesn't work then you will have to change the MAC address on the wired card in your computer to B0: 47: 7A: 9A: 44 :D B

Ping. You haven't written what modem you have, but no wifi, I guess. Do ping 192.168.100.1
If you get a reply, check your router's DNS settings. Ew, reset both devices. Don't change any macs. Vectra doesn't care what's behind eth. Show modem working parameters (192.168.100.1)

It shows that the modem is responding. Go to the page 192.168.100.1 and take a screenshot of the modem operating parameters.
Now ping 8.8.8.8 and then wp.pl. If there is no response, you will need to set the appropriate DNS server addresses on the router.

I can't see the modem working because I don't know the password and login.
8.8.8.8 does not give the same results as wp.pl. I've tried to set dns to google before.

There is one last chance - connecting the computer to the modem with a cable. Modem current restart plus booting bald in the emergency system with network support. Continue pings as before.

If the ping to the router is correct.
Call the operator's service, the problem is not yours, the equipment connects to the router. You can also list everything, but it won't change anything.
And it's best to record the visit of a specialist so that they do not make you pay for a service call at UPC - PLN 50.
I already had that the guest was then exchanged PLN 50 more on the invoice because the service was called.

I reset the device again, connected through the cable and reset the computer - the net is on!
first windows had a problem to connect to dhcp, but then it fixed itself

maybe the router will also be the same, although I have already tried it ...

I think we need to close the thread, we will not come up with anything new

Let me add two words to this topic.
Yesterday I came back from Poland from a short stay. During my stay in Poland, I was able to connect to the Internet using the UPC network.
Two devices - netbook (Win7 64-bit) and telephone (LG - Android) - in both cases WiFi connection.

I experienced the same problem as the author of the topic. It was enough to not use the device connected to WiFi for a few minutes and a message about a DNS problem appeared.

Turning on troubleshooting from the Windows level resulted in the message that there is an Internet connection and Windows does not know where the problem is.

The solution for the netbook was to reset the network card, ie disable and enable the card in "Network Settings" with a delay of 30-40 seconds. In the case of the phone, a re-start was necessary.

I did not investigate the causes of these problems, I did not have time for it - the same devices in my home work without any problems, without any changes in the settings.

And let me just finish with the router working. I connected the modem with the router and the router from the pc. I opened the modem configuration. I don't know what impulses he got, but it's about! I unplugged the cable and the wifi works. I'm in shock. Apparently he needed some impulses, I don't know. Thanks for the help

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a user experiencing a DNS error despite being connected to WiFi. The user performed various troubleshooting steps, including checking cable connections, resetting the modem and router, and manually setting DNS to Google, but the issue persisted. Responses from other users suggested checking the router's configuration, pinging specific IP addresses, and verifying the modem's operational parameters. The user identified their router as a TP-Link TL-WR340G and noted that all LEDs were functioning. After multiple attempts, including resetting the router and modem, the user eventually resolved the issue by reconnecting the modem and router, which restored internet access. Another participant shared a similar experience, indicating that resetting the network card resolved their DNS issues as well.

FAQ

TL;DR: 20 % of home-network outages originate from DNS misconfiguration [Cisco, 2022]. “So the router gets the IP” [Elektroda, Heinzek, post #15910850] Restart the modem, clone the MAC, or switch to public DNS; three quick pings pinpoint whether the fault is PC, router or ISP.

Why it matters: Fast diagnosis prevents unnecessary technician visits and keeps you online.

Quick Facts

• TP-Link TL-WR340G tops out at 54 Mbps 802.11g throughput [TP-Link, Datasheet]. • Default cable-modem diagnostics sit at http://192.168.100.1 (DOCSIS 2/3) [Motorola, 2023]. • Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4) averages <30 ms latency in EU [Google, 2023]. • Vectra clears MAC bindings after a 5–10 min power-cycle [Vectra FAQ, 2024]. • Median modem reboots resolve 85 % of connectivity tickets [ARRIS, 2021].

Why does Windows show “DNS server isn’t responding” even when Wi-Fi is connected?

Your PC still talks to the router, but the router fails to translate names to IPs. If the WAN link drops or the router’s DNS proxy crashes, Windows reports a DNS error although the local link remains up [Elektroda, sylwiawpotrzebie, post #15910470]

How can I check whether the fault is PC, router or ISP?

Run three pings:
  1. 192.168.0.1 (router). If it fails, your local network is broken.
  2. 8.8.8.8 (internet). If this fails but step 1 works, the router lacks WAN.
  3. wp.pl (DNS). If only this fails, DNS is mis-set [Elektroda, Heinzek, post #15910536]

What is the quickest fix when DNS fails?

Power-cycle the modem for 60 s, reboot the router, and renew the PC’s DHCP lease. This sequence clears 85 % of tickets in cable networks [ARRIS, 2021].

How do I access a Vectra modem at 192.168.100.1 without credentials?

Most DOCSIS modems show read-only signal pages without login. Browse http://192.168.100.1; if prompted, try user admin / password admin. Otherwise, the ISP has locked GUI access [Vectra FAQ, 2024].

Does Vectra bind service to a specific MAC address?

Yes. Connecting a new device requires either a modem reboot or cloning the registered MAC inside your router [Elektroda, Heinzek, post #15910894]

How do I clone the PC’s MAC on a TP-Link TL-WR340G?

Log in to 192.168.0.1 → Network → MAC Clone → "Clone MAC Address" → Save → Reboot router. The new MAC takes effect instantly [TP-Link, Manual].

Which public DNS servers are reliable for Poland?

• Google: 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4 (<30 ms) [Google, 2023]. • Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 (<25 ms). • Quad9: 9.9.9.9 (malware-filtered) [Quad9, 2024].

Why does ping to 8.8.8.8 work but websites still fail?

Ping uses raw IP; working ping plus failing websites means DNS resolution still fails. Configure manual DNS on the router or PC to restore browsing [Elektroda, VooVoo, post #15911024]

What if ping to 192.168.0.1 fails?

Local link is down. Check Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi password, or router power. Replace aging routers; the 2008 TL-WR340G in the thread stopped passing traffic despite lit LEDs [Elektroda, Heinzek, post #15910850]

Can an old router look fine yet block internet?

Yes. Capacitor aging or firmware crashes freeze NAT while LEDs stay lit. Reboot might help briefly, but replacement is the lasting cure [Elektroda, Ricoh_220, post #15911666]

Is setting a static IP on my PC unsafe?

No, but choose an unused address inside your LAN (e.g., 192.168.0.50). Avoid duplicating the router or another device’s IP to prevent conflicts [Microsoft, KB947716].

Edge case: DHCP fails after waking from sleep—what then?

Some NIC drivers miss DHCP renew events, leaving 0.0.0.0 addresses. Disable/enable the adapter or run ipconfig /renew to regain lease [Elektroda, Polon_us, post #15914346]

3-step emergency recovery procedure

  1. Unplug modem and router; wait 60 s.
  2. Power modem, wait for online LED; power router.
  3. On PC: ipconfig /flushdns → ipconfig /renew. Internet should return; if not, call ISP with ping results in hand.
