    Hello

As usual, there is a problem with the compatibility of the old device with the new cards.

I have a 4GB micro SD card and need to format to fat16.
As I read, fat16 normally supports 2GB and 4GB also but in special mode.

I tried the format with special programs from under XP and 7.
There is no fat16 option at all

Gparted Live has formatting options for almost all modules. What does the old device and new cards mean? Which device and card? In most cases, the device should be able to format the card directly in the device.

Does not read does not turn on.
Simply jams after inserting the card.

Have you read from Wikipedia? :) And what do you mean by "special mode"?
What system should the card work under and is it functional?

Probably the system in the device supports cards up to 2GB.

Try the program USB Disk Storage Format but the predecessor may be right that the equipment simply does not support cards larger than e.g. 2GB or only supports ordinary SD and newer SDHC not.

I formatted the card to 2 GB and it still doesn't work.

I bought some old one on the Allegro website, it might work.

Because it won't work that way. It's about physical capacity, not how you format it.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around the challenges of formatting a 4GB micro SD card to FAT16 for compatibility with older devices. The original poster reports issues with their device not recognizing the card, even after attempts to format it using various programs on Windows XP and 7. Responses suggest using GParted Live for formatting, but also highlight that many older devices may only support cards up to 2GB. A suggestion to use the USB Disk Storage Format program is made, but it is noted that physical capacity limitations may prevent the card from functioning properly. The FAT16 file system can support a maximum volume of 2GB, but with specific cluster settings, it can extend to 4GB, which may not be compatible with the user's device.
