Hello, my aunt has a problem. Recently, she noticed that when she starts the car, turns on the lights, the dashboard shines dimmer. What could be the reason for this?

Adjusting the dimmer under the light switch.

The dimmer has not been moved, and this has been happening for some time: / When the lights are turned off, the board shines normally, and when the lights are turned on, it goes off slightly.

You will not do anything about it, unless you remake the installation yourself, it is a night mode, the car thinks that when you turn on the lights, it is night and dims the board so that it does not dazzle (distract the driver), only the car does not know that in Poland you also drive traffic lights during the day. :) I suggest you install daytime running lights rather than intervene in the electrical system somehow and the problem will automatically disappear. :)

It's just that a week ago the car didn't think like that and didn't have any night mode turned on: v

If you want someone to help you, write a little more about the car because I only know that it's Opel because newer cars can have such functions. Or maybe someone accidentally turned it on with a key or via VAG?

This is normal symptom. She probably didn't notice it before or she has a damaged dimmer, but the backlight will always be weaker on the lights.
Disconnect the wire from the meter that informs him that the lights are on - then there will be no difference in the backlight of the meter whether the lights are on or not.

To be sure that your aunt is not dark, see how it is in another Astra.

It dims when the lights are turned on, regardless of the time of day

I also have Astra and they are slightly darker for me. Check the battery voltage, maybe the voltage regulator in the alternator goes down. It shouldn't dim the clocks very much.

As a colleague will explain the regulator-board dimming relationship, I cancel the warning.

Topic summary

The discussion revolves around a problem with the dashboard lighting of an Opel Astra, which dims when the car lights are turned on. Initial suggestions included adjusting the dimmer switch, but it was noted that the dimmer had not been moved. Some users explained that this dimming is a normal feature in newer models, designed to reduce glare at night. Others speculated that the issue could be related to a malfunctioning dimmer or electrical system. A user with a 2000 Astra confirmed similar behavior, while another suggested checking the battery voltage as a potential cause. Ultimately, the problem was identified as a faulty dimmer.
