TV Sound Issue: LG lf652v HDMI Audio Problem after Graphics Update (AMD Catalyst 15.7.1 to 17.7.2)

How can I restore HDMI audio on my LG LF652V TV after updating AMD graphics drivers from Catalyst 15.7.1 to Radeon Software Crimson Relive 17.7.2?

The newer AMD Radeon Software Crimson Relive 17.7.2 package seems to miss the AMD High Definition Audio driver, so the practical fix is to revert to Catalyst 15.7.1 or manually install the audio driver from the old package [#16649470][#16649486] The driver may still be in the AMD folder on your system drive if it was not deleted [#16649574] If a manual install fails because it asks for Crimson components, just use the older driver package instead [#16649674][#16649664] For an older card like the HD7770, the forum advice was that older drivers are often the better choice anyway, especially if your games already run fine on them [#16649615][#16649725]

Hi, I have a strange situation.
Some time ago, the sound on TV (LG lf652v) via HDMI from PC worked for me.
But I did graphics updates and suddenly ass did not work.
The picture is normal, but there is no sound.
On these rudders the drivers work fine:
    amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit
    On these no longer:
    whql-win7-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-relive-17.7.2-july27
+ attachment, a photo from the Sound settings, I don't have a TV there at all and it is normal on the previous ones.
Do you have any ideas ??

I wrote everything. And you have photos.
I have an LG TV on these old drivers and I take a test and everything works. And these pictures are taken when I have these new drivers installed and it's completely dead.

So go back to the old driver or extract the AMD high definition audio driver from the old drivers (pick from the installer) and install it manually. It should work.

You have the driver in the AMD directory on your system drive (if you haven't deleted it).

I think I found it, but I think it forces Catalyst installations anyway.

    Added after 43 [seconds]:

damn really strange thing, i know AMD is a big mess, but damn it is so ..

    Added after 1 [minutes]:

And so in your opinion, can you compare these 2 drivers?
    I mean what's the difference.
In my opinion, quite a lot.
    And yours??

    Added after 2 [minutes]:

    Which one would you choose.
And when it comes to games, I play:
    FIFA 16 and 17
    WoW
    AC: S
    DB: X2
    Wiesiek 3
    The Crew 1

With the card you have and the games you write about, it is even advisable to use an older version of the driver (performance).

Oh. Ok, I immediately go back to the past.
Honestly, I'm going to replace the graphics, but only somewhere in December.
I have other more important expenses.
And recently the monitor has fired up, so I only use this TV.
And he wants to make the best use of it.

So I finally have to go back to the drivers:
    amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit

    So would you do ??
Because I am looking for and it is impossible to install this HD Audio driver separately.

    Everything is possible.

If the games you play run fine on older drivers, install them and stop worrying!

I think I will, but it's a pity because I like these "new" drivers.

What do they like if you have better performance on older ones ?!

You have an old card for today's times, so why do you need the latest drivers?

I don't know it that way, but I always thought that when new drivers come out, there is some + to performance.
And that's why I always try to update my drivers.
But you can see that it is not always good.
There must be something in these drivers that it doesn't work. and it should.

Yes, but it works for newer (newest) designs.

The only case for you when it is worth having the latest drivers is when a new game won't work properly with yours or you have other problems.

So seeing that you now have the HD7770, you are not in any danger ;) This card was produced in 2011-12.

FAQ

TL;DR: HD7770 is a 2011–2012 card; "Yes, but it works for newer designs." Rolling back to Catalyst 15.7.1 restores HDMI audio on LG LF652V, while Crimson ReLive 17.7.2 hides the TV device in Windows Sound. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649725] Why it matters: If your HDMI sound disappears after a GPU driver update, this FAQ shows the fastest, proven rollback and fix for AMD HDMI audio on Windows 7.

Quick-Facts

Quick Facts

How do I fix LG LF652V ‘no sound over HDMI’ after updating AMD drivers?

Rollback to Catalyst 15.7.1 for Windows 7 x64. That package restores the HDMI audio device in Windows Sound for the LG TV. Users reported picture OK but no sound only after installing Crimson ReLive 17.7.2. Reverting immediately brought audio back. “Use an older version of the driver” for this card. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649615]

Which exact AMD driver versions worked vs. failed here?

Worked: amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit. Failed: whql-win7-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-relive-17.7.2-july27. On the failing version, the TV did not appear in Windows Sound, so no HDMI audio output was selectable. The same hardware and cable produced audio when the older package was installed, confirming the issue relates to the newer software stack. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649143]

What’s the fastest 3-step rollback to restore HDMI audio?

  1. Uninstall Crimson ReLive 17.7.2 from Programs and Features.
  2. Reboot, then install amd-catalyst-15.7.1-with-dotnet45-win7-64bit.
  3. Set the TV as Default in Control Panel > Sound (Playback). This returns the AMD HDMI Output and TV entry, restoring sound. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649143]

Can I install just the AMD High Definition Audio driver without the full package?

Yes. Extract it from the legacy Catalyst installer and install it manually via Device Manager. A helper advises selecting the audio component from the old package if needed. This approach keeps your current display driver while fixing HDMI audio enumeration problems. If manual extraction is difficult, rolling back the whole package is simpler. [Elektroda, 310artur, post #16649486]

Why do newer drivers sometimes reduce performance or break audio on older GPUs?

Support targets newer architectures first. As one expert notes, use older drivers for an older card and your listed games. The HD7770 dates to 2011–2012, so modern driver optimizations may not help and can remove or change components like the HDMI audio driver. “It works for newer designs.” [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649725]

What is AMD High Definition Audio?

It’s the HDMI/DisplayPort audio function exposed by AMD GPUs. Windows lists it as a separate audio device. If this driver is missing or mismatched after a graphics update, the TV won’t appear in Sound > Playback, and audio over HDMI is unavailable until the right driver returns. [Elektroda, adamadi33, post #16649470]

Windows shows picture but no AMD HDMI Output in Sound—what does that imply?

It implies the HDMI audio endpoint failed to install or enumerate. In this case, the user saw zero TV entries after installing 17.7.2, but the entry reappeared on 15.7.1. That pinpoints the software package, not the cable, TV, or GPU hardware, as the cause of silence. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649143]

Is there any edge case I should know when installing the extracted audio driver?

Yes. One attempt to install the extracted AMD audio driver failed with an error about missing Crimson components. If that happens, abandon the partial install and perform a full rollback to the older Catalyst package to restore HDMI audio reliably. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649674]

What’s the simplest rule of thumb for driver choice with an HD7770 and older games?

Use the older, stable driver if your games run fine. Expert advice emphasized that with this card and the listed titles, the older package is advisable for performance and stability. Update only when a specific new game demands it. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649615]

Which games were tested by the user, and does that matter?

The user cited six titles, including FIFA 16/17 and The Witcher 3. A stable legacy driver sufficed for those, supporting the recommendation to prioritize stability over chasing newer releases on a 2011–2012 GPU. Pick the driver that keeps these running cleanly. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649590]

What is AMD Catalyst vs. Crimson ReLive in plain terms?

Catalyst is the older AMD driver suite; Crimson ReLive is a newer branch that changed components and packaging. For this setup, Catalyst 15.7.1 included a working AMD High Definition Audio driver, while Crimson ReLive 17.7.2 did not present the TV in Sound. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649143]

How do I manually select the TV as the default audio device?

Open Control Panel > Sound > Playback, right‑click the TV/AMD HDMI Output, and choose Set as Default. A helper first asked to ensure AMD HDMI Output was selected, which it wasn’t on the failing driver because it didn’t appear at all. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649151]

Where can I find the driver files if I already ran the AMD installer?

Look in the AMD directory on your system drive, which caches extracted installer components. From there, you can point Device Manager to the audio driver folder or reinstall the full legacy package if needed. This avoids redownloading. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649574]

Will the newest drivers ever help my older card?

Yes, but mainly when a new game fails on your current version or you hit another bug. Otherwise, newer optimizations target newer designs, not a 2011–2012 HD7770. Update for necessity, not habit, on aging hardware. [Elektroda, Kasek21, post #16649725]

Can I keep Crimson for graphics but swap only the audio piece?

It’s possible by extracting and installing only the AMD High Definition Audio component, but a user hit an installer dependency error. If you meet that edge case, the reliable route is a full revert to Catalyst 15.7.1. [Elektroda, marcin926, post #16649674]
