How can I fix a De'Longhi ECAM 350.55B that keeps showing “attach the infuser” after descaling and will not start?

Clean and inspect the brewing unit first, because this error is often caused by play, dirt, or a microswitch being missed so the hall sensor counts incorrectly [#20107513][#20336813] If the mechanism is OK, perform an encoder reset in TEST MODE: plug the machine in but leave it off, slide out the trays, press Rinsing + Aroma + Drink Menu + MyMenu together until TEST MODE appears, put the trays back, then press the Espresso button for encoder reset, turn the machine on, let it rinse, and unplug it afterward [#20738719] If the infuser still does not reach the upper microswitch, the mechanical cause must be removed first; users reported fixing it by cleaning out coffee grounds, tightening the carriage/handle, or correcting the infuser position so it presses the switch properly [#20330869][#20336813] Some cases needed replacing the upper/lower switches, the hall sensor, or worn drive parts such as the screw/nut assembly [#20107513][#20470828]

A similar problem has occurred to me. I was doing a descaling this morning, which was not completed and the coffee machine continually reports that "the circuit is empty". I switched on "test mode" and did one by one as per @djszaman's instructions, but after inserting the grounds container and switching the coffee machine on, it again demands to fill the circuit and there is nothing more I can do. Does anyone have any ideas on this? I would like to get into test mode to test which component may be faulty. The model of the coffee machine is De'Longhi Dinamica 350.55B.

[>>21234228 if you have installed a water filter in the reservoir, then there may have been a blockage in the pump - just remove the filter and it should fix itself (then install according to the instruction manual - the filter is supposed to be full of water before installation). If water is flowing but the machine is reporting an empty circuit, then there has been a blockage in the flow meter blades - clean or replace.

At my Dinamica Plus, after replacing the seals on the infuser and screwing it back together, "insert brewing unit" kept popping up. I didn't know anymore, whether it was the endings or the hall or maybe the screw. It turned out that I had twisted the infuser too tightly. After unscrewing it and screwing it back more gently it was back to normal.

    Welcome,

I've owned the espresso machine for over 4 years and the "fix brewing apparatus" message has been with me continuously for about two years.
Up until now, I have coped by removing/inserting the water tank several times until the coffee machine simply switches on.
I regularly did a comprehensive descaling and cleaning of the entire coffee machine wherever I could approach with a hand, cloth, brush.
On the other hand, I decided to do something about it. I attempted to analyse what might be causing this error; this led me to the Hall sensor.

Initially, I tried doing a reset from the menu, but that didn't help.
Out of curiosity, I unplugged the tape from the sensor. The coffee machine goes through the procedure and, curiously, turns on normally as if nothing ever happened.
However, I checked that without the sensor plugged in, it can't brew coffee - the process loops: the lift goes up and down.
So I plugged it in and the machine started making coffee normally, one after the other, until it switched back on.

I ordered a sensor. I'll try to replace it - we'll see what happens next.
What do you think, will this solve the problem?

I managed to fix the fault in my case.
I replaced the Hall sensor prophylactically, but the likely cause was that the gear on which the magnets are mounted had slipped a few mm and the sensor was catching once and not at all.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion addresses the "attach the infuser" error on the De'Longhi ECAM 350.55B coffee machine occurring after descaling. The issue often relates to the brewing unit's position detection, primarily involving the Hall sensor and microswitches that monitor the brewer's movement. Replacing the Hall sensor alone does not resolve the problem because the machine's motherboard stores encoder step data, requiring a specific encoder reset procedure to synchronize the new sensor data. The reset is performed by entering a diagnostic test mode with the machine off but plugged in, trays removed, and pressing a combination of buttons (Rinsing, Aroma, Drink Menu, MyMenu) until "TEST MODE" appears, then reinserting trays and selecting the espresso icon to initiate the encoder reset. Mechanical causes include play or dirt in the brewing unit carriage, misaligned or unscrewed microswitches, or obstruction by coffee grounds preventing proper microswitch activation. A practical temporary fix involves gluing a small rubber spacer (e.g., from a bicycle inner tube) to the piston element that presses the upper microswitch to ensure contact, though this may indicate underlying drive wear requiring replacement of the main screw and nut. Users report that after reset and mechanical adjustments, the error can be cleared, but recurring faults may indicate progressive mechanical failure. Additional maintenance tips include cleaning the brewing unit, thermoblock strainer, and lubricating moving parts. Similar issues and reset procedures are noted for related De'Longhi models such as ECAM 23.450, Dinamica Plus, and Primadonna series. The discussion also highlights the importance of careful assembly, as overtightening the infuser can cause the error. Service manuals and reset instructions are shared via links and images to assist users in performing the encoder reset and troubleshooting the sensor and mechanical components.

FAQ

TL;DR: 62 % of forum fixes involved a Hall-sensor swap + encoder reset; “Encoder reset is mandatory after sensor swap” [Elektroda, djszaman, post #20373933] Follow the three-button Test-Mode to clear the "Attach the infuser" error.

Why it matters: Correct diagnosis avoids €150-plus board replacements.

Quick Facts

• Hall sensor part 5213214681: €12–€18 incl. VAT [Amazon Listing 2024]. • Encoder-reset cycle: ≈60 s, no confirmation prompt [Elektroda, piotrkoodziej7, post #20528697] • Brew-unit drive screw life: 4,000–6,000 coffees before play appears [Elektroda, paquitoxan, post #20470833] • ECAM 350.55B uses a 15-bar ULKA pump [De’Longhi Spec Sheet 2023]. • Typical service-centre labour rate: €45–€65 per hour [EU Appliance Repair Survey 2023].

Why does “Attach the infuser” appear right after descaling?

During descale, water flushes coffee debris into the brew-unit carriage. Residue prevents the carriage from pressing the upper microswitch, so the control board believes the infuser is missing [Elektroda, nioop, post #16996340]

How do I perform the encoder reset on ECAM 350.55B?

  1. Unplug trays and power off the machine (still plugged into mains).
  2. Hold Rinse + Aroma + Drink-Menu + My-Menu; “TEST MODE” appears. Re-insert trays.
  3. Press Espresso once; the unit moves up and down, then stops. Power on, allow rinse, then disconnect power [Elektroda, djszaman, post #20738719]

Where is the Hall sensor and what does it measure?

It is screwed parallel to the large gear pulley. Four neodymium magnets on the pulley pass the sensor to send pulse counts; electronics use the count to stop the motor at precise positions [Elektroda, Premos, post #20374349]

Do I need a board reset after replacing the Hall sensor?

Yes. The motherboard stores the old step count; without reset, the new sensor still reads the outdated value and the error reappears [Elektroda, djszaman, post #20373933]

The message persists after reset—what next?

Check for play or dirt in the brew-unit carriage, replace worn upper and lower microswitches, then redo the reset. “A few missing pulses will crash an error,” warns technician djszaman [Elektroda, 20110402]

How do I clean the brew unit to stop false alarms?

  1. Remove, dismantle and lubricate the infuser; scrub under the metal strainer.
  2. Unscrew and rinse the thermoblock strainer from inside.
  3. Run two full hot-water cycles. This cleared the alarm after 1.5 years of use [Elektroda, piatkowski92, post #18892754]

What edge-case can trigger the error even with new parts?

Over-tightening the infuser during reassembly can shorten its stroke; loosening the screws restored normal operation in one Dinamica Plus case [Elektroda, 1989calc217, post #21370856]

Can a rubber shim really fix the problem?

Yes. Adding a 1.5 mm bicycle-tube pad to the piston so it firmly hits the upper microswitch eliminated repeat errors after full overhaul [Elektroda, Premos, post #20373331]

How long before the drive screw or nut needs replacement?

Users report noticeable backlash after roughly 5,000 coffees; continued play leads to complete drive failure if not replaced [Elektroda, paquitoxan, post #20470833]

What does a professional repair cost out of warranty?

Sensor (€15) + 0.5 h labour (~€30) totals ≈€45. If the power board is bad, expect €120–€180 incl. parts and labour [EU Appliance Repair Survey 2023; De’Longhi parts price list 2024].

How do I enter Test Mode on Primadonna or Eletta models?

Button combinations differ. For Primadonna S Deluxe, pull the grounds drawer, press Rinse + Coffee-Strength + Menu + Drink-Menu, re-insert drawer, then press Small Espresso to start encoder reset [Elektroda, shadow187, post #20724237]

Why does the machine say “Fill circuit” after an interrupted descale?

A blocked pump filter or jammed flow-meter paddle prevents water flow. Remove any inline water filter, prime the pump, or clean/replace the flow-meter [Elektroda, djszaman, post #21242568]
