Witwm. I have a problem after upgrading system widnows 10. I came home and suddenly after updating the black screen and only on the desktop was a basket and such a message as in the picture (attachment).
I even managed this with system32 / userprofiles, I copied Deskop and put it in system / user.
These icons that appeared on the desktop appeared, but unfortunately the Windows taskbar still does not work. Nothing can be clicked on it, the internet does not turn on.
Eg Google chrome as an application also starts, e.g. Origin. But when I want to run, for example, Folder from the desktop, I have this error: "an attempt was made to refer to a token that does not exist, and, for example, Explorer.exe (Annex 2)
Do you know what to do with it?
I tried simple ways such as via the task manager to run explorer.exe, but unfortunately it does not respond
Restore drops out because there are no restore points. Creating a new user by cmd, also denied.

Do you have your files in C: \ Users?

Create a new account and check if it works, if so, rip your files from the old profile.

I have the same as Mr. Grzegorz. An account was also created. The icons from the desktop are. The system takes a very long time to start and after logging in the user also appears the message: "Unknown hard error". Eg a game from other partitions you can also enable newly created folders or eg Enter My Computer.
But the bottom bar still doesn't work

If you can't undo the update and you don't have any restore points, I'm afraid you're reinstalling.

I can't practically click anything ... only the task manager is working but I can't turn on any folders from it because something about a "token" pops up.

You can start by restoring the W10 factory settings from the installation media.

From the installation media, if I am not mistaken, it is also possible to repair the system, so I hope you do not lose data

Were you able to restore the system to a usable state?
I have the same case after the April 2018 update on one of the computers.

Unfortunately not. I didn't even have a Windows board because the laptop was bought with the system already installed.
However, the seller took it on himself (because a laptop was bought a year ago) and even sent a free courier to me and said that they would fix it ... we will see :)

Long hours of combining, but I managed the problem.

    1. First manual return to Windows before the update:
    - first, backup the partition with the system using Clonezilla (or another program),
    - I started Ubuntu (just from the disc because I was on hand) in Live mode,
    - create a folder on the system disk, e.g. "WINDOWS.NEW"
    - move the "Program Data", "Program Files", "Program Files (x86)", "Recovery", "inetpub", "Cleanup", "Users", "WINDOWS" folders to it,
    - move all folders from the "WINDOWS.OLD" folder to the root directory of the disk,
    - copy (or if there is little disk space - move) the contents of all folders from "WINDOWS.NEW" to the root directory of the disk WITHOUT OVERLOADING FILES! Very important - it's about "filling in" missing system files.

    2. The system should start - I still didn't have the Start Menu.

    3. I took a few steps to restore the Start Menu described on the internet, but none of them helped. But it might not hurt to try:
Start Menu Not Working in Windows 10 [Solved]
    Full Fix: Microsoft.Windows.ShellExperienceHost error

    4. We run the reinstallation of the update that was previously unsuccessful.
After this operation my system came back to life.

FAQ

TL;DR: After a Windows 10 update, taskbar/Explorer may fail; you have 10 days to roll back. "This option is only available for 10 days after an upgrade." Use Advanced startup, SFC/DISM, or reinstall from media. [Recovery options in Windows]

Why it matters: For Windows 10 users facing “Location is not available,” token errors, or a dead taskbar after an update, this FAQ shows fast, safe recovery paths.

Quick Facts

  • Rollback window: You can go back to the previous version for 10 days after a feature update if Windows.old exists. [Recovery options in Windows]
  • Windows.old is automatically removed after about 10 days, which removes the rollback option. [Free up drive space in Windows]
  • USB install media: Use an empty flash drive with at least 8 GB capacity to create bootable Windows media. [Create installation media for Windows]
  • System repair standard: Run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then SFC /SCANNOW from an elevated console. [Repair a Windows Image]

What does “Location is not available” after a Windows 10 update actually mean?

It usually indicates Windows loaded a temporary or corrupted profile, so Desktop/Documents paths break. Symptoms include a black desktop, only Recycle Bin, and a frozen taskbar. Explorer may throw the token error. If restore points and rollback are unavailable, plan a repair or reinstall after backing up data. [Elektroda, MILOOO44, post #17222788]

How do I roll back to the previous Windows if Start and taskbar don’t work?

Boot into Advanced startup, then go to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates. Remove the latest feature update. Microsoft notes, "This option is only available for 10 days after an upgrade." If it’s gone, use Reset this PC or installation media instead. [Recovery options in Windows]

I can’t open File Explorer. How do I back up my files first?

Use Advanced startup > Command Prompt to copy C:\Users\YourName data to an external drive, or boot a Linux Live USB and copy files. A user succeeded by booting Ubuntu Live, working with Windows.old and user folders, then restoring access after reapplying the update. [Elektroda, krollew, post #17244415]

How can I check if my drive is failing when Windows won’t open?

Check SMART health using CrystalDiskInfo from another PC or a PE/Live USB. Read the status: Good, Caution, or Bad. If you see Caution or Bad, clone the disk before any repair attempts. This edge case prevents data loss during recovery steps. [Elektroda, daminek1234, post #17222971]

Explorer.exe shows “an attempt was made to reference a token that does not exist.” What should I try?

Repair system files offline. From Advanced startup, open Command Prompt and run: DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth, then SFC /SCANNOW. If corruption persists, uninstall the latest update or perform Reset this PC. This targets component store and system file integrity. [Repair a Windows Image]

How do I create a new local admin account when the UI is broken?

Open Command Prompt from Advanced startup. Create a user with: net user FixAdmin P@ssw0rd /add. Then grant admin rights: net localgroup administrators FixAdmin /add. Reboot and sign in to test the shell. Replace names/passwords as needed. [Net user]

What if I can’t undo the update or create users—do I have to reinstall?

Yes. When rollback is unavailable, no restore points exist, and the shell keeps failing, a clean reinstall is fastest. Boot installation media and proceed with repair options or a full reinstall. A forum expert advised reinstalling in this situation. [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #17228893]

How do I do a Reset this PC that keeps my files?

Boot to Advanced startup. Select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC > Keep my files. Windows reinstalls, removes apps and drivers, and preserves your personal files. You’ll need to reinstall programs and Windows updates afterward. Back up anyway before starting. [Recovery options in Windows]

I don’t have installation media. How do I make one?

On another PC, download Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool. Insert an empty 8 GB or larger USB drive. Choose Create installation media and write it to the USB. Then boot the problem PC from that USB to repair or reinstall. [Create installation media for Windows]

The Start menu and taskbar won’t click. Any quick repairs before reinstall?

Try Task Manager to Restart Windows Explorer. Then re-register Start via PowerShell as outlined in the “Start Menu Not Working in Windows 10 [Solved]” guide. It also addresses ShellExperienceHost errors. If no change, proceed to recovery options. [Start Menu Not Working in Windows 10 [Solved]]

Is using OEM/Lenovo factory recovery a good idea here?

Yes, if you accept losing installed apps and returning to the factory image. OEM recovery restores the system to its original state. Back up personal data first, then run the vendor’s recovery utility or key sequence. [Lenovo OneKey Recovery]

My system boots but Start is missing even after rollback. What next?

Reapply the same Windows feature update from Windows Update or installation media. One user manually rolled back using Windows.old, then reinstalled the update, which restored Start and the shell. This can stabilize components after a failed upgrade. [Elektroda, krollew, post #17244415]

How do I run Startup Repair from the USB?

Boot from the Windows USB. At the setup screen, choose Repair your computer. Navigate to Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair. Let Windows scan and fix boot issues automatically before trying other steps. [Recovery options in Windows]

How do I manually roll back using Windows.old when the GUI is broken?

Advanced users can restore files from Windows.old via a Live USB. How-To:
  1. Boot a Linux Live USB, mount the Windows partition, and create a WINDOWS.NEW folder.
  2. Move current WINDOWS/Program Files/Users into WINDOWS.NEW; move contents of WINDOWS.OLD to root.
  3. Copy missing items from WINDOWS.NEW back to root without overwriting; reboot and then reapply the update. [Elektroda, krollew, post #17244415]
