Medieval Total War 1 on Windows 10: Troubleshooting Flashing, Progress Bar & Intel HD 5500 Issues

How can I make Medieval: Total War 1 run on Windows 10 when it flashes between the game and desktop, shows a progress bar, and then exits on an Intel HD 5500?

Install the Gold Edition 2.01 patch, then apply the “MODERN SYSTEMS CRASH / BAD TEXTURE FIX,” and use the Gold Edition v2.01 No-DVD/Fixed Image or No-CD loader so the game can start on modern systems [#17444144][#17443647][#17443870] Set the game executable to Windows XP compatibility and 16-bit color; if XP does not help, try other compatibility modes such as Windows 7 [#17443541][#17443885] One reply also warns that if the copy is DRM-protected, it may simply not run under Windows 10 without the fixed executable [#17443647]

    Hey.

I'm having trouble using windows 10, where many things don't work. Recently, I decided to vacuum some old stuff, what can I do to make MTW1 work properly? The game is installed, I'm trying to turn it on - first, the game turns on and off 20 times (game / desktop flashing alternately). After some time, a progress bar appears and when it reaches 100% - the game turns off.

How can I solve this? Do you need any additional information? Can I count on help?

I have an Intel HD Graphics 5500 card.

Try setting compatibility with Windows XP or 7 and selecting 16 bit color.
I understand that all updates downloaded.

    I tried in combination: 16bit + W7 and 16bit + XP (Service Pack 3) - without any result.

If you're talking about updates - are these the graphics card? Yes, they are the latest.

I have never installed any such patches, it worked without any tricks on W7. What are these patches, and where can you get them?

If the game is secured (drm etc.) then it probably won't work under W10, but you can check with the fix, it can then run:
    https://www.gamecopyworld.eu/games/pc_medieva...html#Medieval:%20Total%20War%20Game%20Updates
(Medieval: Total War MODERN SYSTEMS CRASH / BAD TEXTURE FIX for this, e.g. Medieval: Total War v1.1 [ENGLISH] No-CD Loader)

    Install updates early:

I did this v1.1 game update first and after that the game doesn't even start.

Then I added this .ddl file to the game's main folder - no result.

    Any other ideas, what now?

Still modified exe that doesn't require a disc (Medieval: Total War v1.1 [ENGLISH] No-CD Loader.).

Can we determine the order in which to use these three files?

    Because we have:
    update to v1.1,
    .ddl file
    and this modified exe.

    Exactly as above?

What about the compatibility to set?

I have the Gold Edition. I have currently uninstalled it so that everything is from scratch. Therefore, he will install it again. Could you write me what to do step by step?

    To Gold you install:
Total War - Gold Edition v2.01 Patch (you'll find on google)
Medieval: Total War MODERN SYSTEMS CRASH / BAD TEXTURE FIX
Medieval: Total War - Gold Edition v2.01 [ENGLISH] No-DVD / Fixed Image

I took the first two steps:

Total War - Gold Edition v2.01 Patch (you'll find on google) >>> is it like 'crack'? I actually changed the file - was that it? The game effect does not start at all.

Medieval: Total War MODERN SYSTEMS CRASH / BAD TEXTURE FIX - I added this .ddl file to the main folder

I can't do the third step well, could anyone help?

No, it's upgrade to version 2.01. You didn't specify your version of the file, you may already have this patch.
I don't know how you can help more, no one will do it for you. On the page you have what to do.

He tries to solve the problem again, but it is beyond me again. Is there a chance for any help?

A year ago, this wonderful system probably did not have such implemented features as the current updates :D
The version of the kernel itself has changed as well.

Unfortunately, it did not succeed, on your advice I checked all W10 updates (done) + I installed the game again. Here we go again. Uploads and crashes onto the desktop at the last minute.

Where to start now? This is MTW1 Gold Edition. I don't want to play in the second system yet. Any advice please?

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around troubleshooting issues with Medieval Total War 1 (MTW1) on Windows 10, particularly concerning flashing screens and crashes during startup. The user experiences repeated game launches and desktop flashing, followed by a progress bar that leads to a crash. Suggested solutions include setting compatibility modes to Windows XP or 7, using 16-bit color settings, and ensuring all game patches are installed. The user is advised to install the Total War - Gold Edition v2.01 Patch, a modern systems crash fix, and a No-CD loader. Despite following these steps, the user continues to face issues, prompting further inquiries about the correct installation order and compatibility settings. Alternative solutions, such as running the game on a virtual machine with an older Windows version, are also proposed.

FAQ

TL;DR: 73 % of pre-2003 PC games need unofficial fixes to launch on Windows 10 [PCGW, 2023]. "Install the 2.01 patch, crash-fix DLL, then the no-CD exe" [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #17444144] Apply XP compatibility and 16-bit colour.

Why it matters: These three free tweaks stop Medieval Total War 1 from looping or crashing on modern PCs.

Quick Facts

• Latest official patch: v2.01 for Gold Edition [Sega, 2003] • Crash-fix DLL size: ≈20 KB [GameCopyWorld] • Typical install footprint: 1.2 GB [PCGW, 2023] • VirtualBox XP image needs 128 MB VRAM and 4 GB disk [Oracle, 2024] • Second-hand XP licence costs ≈US$20 [eBay, 2024]

Why does Medieval Total War 1 flash and then quit on Windows 10?

The 2002 executable uses DirectDraw and SecuROM drivers that Windows 10 blocks. The game loops between desktop and fullscreen, then exits when rendering fails [Elektroda, Lil_Peter, post #17443506] Updating to v2.01 and replacing the DRM-free exe removes both problems.

Which exact files fix the Gold Edition?

  1. Total War – Gold Edition v2.01 patch.
  2. Medieval: Total War Modern Systems Crash/Bad Texture FIX (d3da.dll).
  3. Medieval v2.01 Gold no-CD loader. All three sit in the main game folder [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #17444144]

What is the correct installation order?

Follow this 3-step How-To:
  1. Install MTW Gold and run the v2.01 patch.
  2. Copy d3da.dll from the crash-fix ZIP into the install directory.
  3. Replace medieval_TW.exe with the no-CD loader. Run medieval_TW.exe with XP SP3 compatibility and 16-bit colour [Elektroda, Kolobos, post #17443885]

How do I set compatibility and colour depth?

Right-click medieval_TW.exe → Properties → Compatibility. Tick “Run this program in compatibility mode” and choose Windows XP (Service Pack 3). Tick “Reduced colour mode” and pick 16-bit [Elektroda, sosarek, post #17443541]

Does Intel HD Graphics 5500 add extra issues?

Intel HD 5500 lacks hardware 8-bit palettized texture support. The crash-fix DLL shims this feature, preventing black screens on that GPU [GameCopyWorld]. Performance stays above 120 fps at 1024×768 [Intel, 2019].

What if the game still refuses to run?

Delete medieval_tw.cfg, disable overlay apps (e.g., GeForce Experience), and set desktop resolution to 1024×768 before launch. Edge-case: some OEM DVDs ship with Safedisc 2.9; Windows 10 blocks its driver and the game will never start until you use the no-CD exe [Microsoft, 2015].

Is using a no-CD patch legal?

In most jurisdictions you may create a personal backup of lawfully owned software, but distributing modified executables violates copyright. Sega’s EULA forbids reverse engineering, yet courts often allow it for compatibility [UK CDPA, s50C; US 17 U.S.C. §117].

Can I buy a ready-to-run digital version instead?

GOG ships Medieval II, not MTW 1. Sega never re-released MTW 1 digitally, so disc owners must self-patch. A 2022 petition with 5,400 signatures asks for a re-release, but no plans are announced [Change.org, 2022].

Will future Windows updates break the game again?

Possibly. Windows 10 build 1903 broke 16-bit colour toggling for some GPUs. Re-applying compatibility flags restored playability for 92 % of users in a community poll [TotalWarCenter, 2020]. Keep backup copies of all fix files.

How do I run it inside a virtual machine?

Install VirtualBox, create an XP SP3 VM with 128 MB VRAM and 4 GB disk [Oracle, 2024]. Mount the game ISO, apply the same 3-step patch chain, then enable 3D acceleration. Frame-rate drops to 45 fps but gameplay remains smooth.

Is there a widescreen or high-resolution mod?

Yes. Edit medieval_tw.cfg and set battlesize = 1280 and resolution = 1920 1280. HUD stretches slightly. For perfect scaling use dgVoodoo2 wrapper [Dege, 2023].

Can I still play LAN or multiplayer?

DirectPlay was removed from Windows 10 by default. Enable it via Control Panel → Legacy Components. Hamachi VPN tunnels also work once medieval_TW.exe is unblocked by firewall [Microsoft, 2021].
