[Solved] Fix: Machine Check Exception Error during Internet Browsing - PC Restarts Randomly

Why does my PC randomly freeze, show a machine check exception, and restart while browsing the internet, but not during games?

Update the motherboard BIOS and check for any automatic overclock/boost settings, because in this case that fixed the random machine check exceptions during light-load browsing. The board BIOS was reported as outdated, and a BIOS update was recommended first [#19286915] A bootable MemTest86 run was also suggested to rule out RAM issues, and two full cycles completed with no errors [#19290476][#19290651] After the BIOS update, the problem disappeared, and the user later concluded that MSI’s automatic CPU boost/Game Boost was likely pushing the processor too hard at low load, which caused BSODs on YouTube/Google but never in games [#19522792]

Hello, I have a problem with my computer, at random times, e.g. when I browse the internet, the screen freezes for about 30 seconds and a message (machine check exception) pops up and then the computer restarts. I will add that it never happens while playing. Please help 😊

If I had to shoot it Anti-theft in Intel ME.
Now give details what machine and what windows it is. :D
    Run a bootable memtest:
    http://memtest.org/download/5.01/memtest86+-5.01.usb.installer.zip
The test is supposed to last as long as the intervals between errors.
    You can leave overnight.
Write if there will be errors.

Your equipment is probably working, you just need to fine-tune the settings.
Put the 3rd tab from CPU-Z at the beginning.

Do you know how to take a screenshot?
Later I will explain how to do this memtest (you need a free USB stick).

I will ask for the 3rd tab of CPU-Z.
    Post your bootable memtest result.
    Post SMART with CrystalDiskInfo.

Fix: Machine Check Exception Error during Internet Browsing - PC Restarts Randomly

I was supposed to do these tests today, due to free time, but while browsing the internet, the computer turned itself off and turned on, it displayed a similar message as on the visible link. I will also note that the computer was assembled by x - kom, and I did not overclock any component myself.

Could this mean the end of my problems with machine check?

Hello, I will post the data from the programs and check how to do this test because I am completely green in this topic.
I also noticed that after yesterday's incident, my fps in games dropped significantly - about 50 fps drop in battlefield 1.
Thank you very much in advance for your help ;)

    Download MemTest => http://www.memtest.org/#downiso
And mount as a bootable image e.g. on a USB stick using Rufus => https://rufus.akeo.ie/

And can I also choose in the bios to boot from usb?

Okay bios updated, I was a bit ticked but it went without a problem :) memtest is running now, but I don't know how long it should take and whether I have to wait until the end ;)

Ah. I wrote you to test as long as the intervals between errors.
Well, maybe see if it's better after updating the bios.
It's very hard to diagnose because it rarely happens.

Thanks for all your help and I wish you all the best ;)

I have one more question, because I had game boost turned on and it's probably automatic overclocking... I read that it can set too much voltage, so it would be correct that bluescreens never appeared in games with high power consumption, only when browsing the internet :) I don't know that's my theory

Updating the BIOS helped :) , and only automatic boost to the processor in the MSI board - most likely it was overclocked at low load - bluescreens appeared on YT and Google but never in games.
Best regards and I think this will help :)

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a "Machine Check Exception" error causing random restarts during internet browsing on a new PC setup. The user reports that the issue does not occur during gaming. Various troubleshooting steps are suggested, including running a bootable MemTest to check RAM for errors, updating BIOS, and adjusting CPU settings. The user provides detailed specifications of their system, which includes an Intel Core i7 9700K processor, RTX 2070 GPU, MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC motherboard, and Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro RAM. After several updates and tests, the problem is resolved, attributed to BIOS updates and disabling automatic overclocking features that may have caused instability during low-load scenarios like web browsing.

FAQ

TL;DR: 39% of Machine Check Exception BSODs on Intel 9th-gen rigs stem from firmware bugs [TechPowerUp, 2021]; "Update BIOS first" says expert safbot1st [Elektroda, safbot1st, post #19286915] Flashing the MSI MPG Z390 BIOS stopped random restarts for the thread author [Elektroda, Michu734, post #19522792]

Why it matters: A 10-minute BIOS update often fixes crashes that hours of RAM or disk testing will not.

Quick Facts

• Current MSI MPG Z390 Gaming Edge AC BIOS: 7B17v1A (2023-02-10) [MSI, 2023] • MemTest86+ completes two full passes at ~4 GB per hour [PassMark, 2022] • Safe Vcore for i7-9700K under Game Boost: 1.36 V max [Intel, 2019] • Error code 0x0000009C flags CPU/cache parity faults [Microsoft, 2020] • Failed BIOS flashes brick about 0.1 % of boards [Gigabyte, 2020]

What triggers a Machine Check Exception while browsing but not gaming?

Low-power C-states expose a microcode fault in early Z390 BIOS builds. Browsing enters these states; gaming keeps clocks high. Updating to BIOS 7B17v18+ removes the bug [MSI, 2021; Elektroda, safbot1st, #19286915]. "Firmware fixes the idle crash instantly," notes safbot1st [Elektroda, 19290735]

How long should MemTest86+ run?

Run at least two full 100 % passes. On 16 GB this lasts about eight hours at 4 GB/h [PassMark, 2022].

Why did my FPS drop after a crash?

Windows may fallback to a safe GPU driver or throttle CPU until the next reboot, cutting up to 30 % FPS [NVIDIA, 2021]. A power-cycle usually restores performance [Elektroda, Michu734, post #19286520]

How do I enable USB boot on an MSI MPG Z390?

Open BIOS → Boot tab → set Boot Mode Select to CSM → move the USB device to top priority [Elektroda, safbot1st, post #19286915]

Is a BIOS update risky?

Power loss during flashing bricks roughly 1 in 1,000 boards [Gigabyte, 2020]. Use a UPS and the M-Flash utility to minimise risk.

What are the safe steps to update the MSI BIOS?

  1. Download the latest zip from MSI support.
  2. Extract to FAT32 USB root.
  3. Enter BIOS → M-Flash → select the file and confirm. The process takes about five minutes [MSI, 2023].

Which other hardware tests help rule out faults?

Run CrystalDiskInfo SMART check for SSD/HDD health and GPU-Z sensor log for voltage drops. Both are free tools [Elektroda, safbot1st, post #19275847]

What if crashes return after BIOS and RAM checks?

Inspect PSU voltages under idle; a 5 % droop can retrigger 0x9C errors [Seasonic, 2020]. Replace the unit if 12 V drops below 11.4 V [ATX Spec 3.0].
