[Solved] UPC Giga Connect Box: Internet Issues - Increased Ping & Decreased Speeds (DL/UL 40-50Mb/s)

Why did my UPC Giga Connect Box Wi‑Fi ping increase from about 7 ms to 20–30 ms and speeds drop to around 40–50 Mb/s?

Your higher ping is most likely caused by UPC assigning IPv6/CGNAT rather than by a hardware fault; ask UPC support or use the old My UPC Help Assistant to switch the line to IPv4, and keep the Connect Box in router mode so Wi‑Fi still works [#19231018] [#19231036] [#19231123] [#19234881] If you are testing over 5 GHz Wi‑Fi, set the channel width to 80 MHz, try a clean channel such as 48 or 108, and retest with the other Wi‑Fi clients disconnected [#19230949] [#19230990] [#19231029] The reported 650 Mb/s link rate means the laptop is connected in 802.11ac 2x2 at 80 MHz, so real throughput should be roughly 470–500 Mb/s; much lower results point to Wi‑Fi settings or interference [#19231029] Also compare speedtest.net on the nearest server with speedtest.pl and run a tracert to google.pl, because the higher 20–30 ms reading may simply come from a farther test server [#19234910] [#19231036]

You have to opt out of IPv6.

Really ? I thought that I should not do it and when it comes to IPv6 it is like something newer better but not all platforms have switched to it yet?

IPv6 is the new IP protocol because IPv4 addresses are running out. Unfortunately, it does not work as needed yet and a negligible percentage of websites work on IPv6 addresses, so they introduced CGNAT, where you get IPv4 so that you can even use websites, services, games, etc. that run on IPv4 and which are probably 90% +. Do not be afraid of this change, last year I still had UPC and for the entire 4-year contract I had IPv4 loaded, like most familiar or online users. Now I have T-Mobile FTTH which has no IPv6 at all. As I wrote to you, operators test IPv6 on users. And it works, as you can see, you have a higher ping, you have closed ports in games, etc., because the servers do not work with IPv6 and you connect via CGNAT, so that you can even enter a website such as elektroda.pl.

And now on the modem? But if there is something I can't connect to the cable. Or I have some other additional options

No, don't switch anything to the modem, because your wifi won't work. Just use the internet as you used to. Check if your ping has dropped. That's it. You can't do anything else.

Well, we won't help you more in this matter, I guess. Run speedtest on speedtest.net to the nearest server and tracert to google.pl and put the result.

Well, you have a 7ms ping to the nearest server. At speedtest.pl, it connects you to some further one. You can't do anything else :)

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around internet connectivity issues experienced with the UPC Giga Connect Box, specifically increased ping and decreased download/upload speeds after returning from vacation. Initially, the user reported a stable connection with low ping (7ms) and high speeds (around 100Mb/s). However, post-vacation, the ping increased to 20-30ms, with download speeds dropping to 40-50Mb/s. Various troubleshooting steps were suggested, including checking the wireless card type, conducting a Wi-Fi network diagnosis using tools like InSSIDer or Wifi Analyzer, and adjusting router settings such as channel width and IPv6 configuration. The user was advised to switch to IPv4 for potentially better performance and to contact UPC for further assistance. After implementing some changes, the user reported improvements in ping and overall connectivity.

FAQ

TL;DR: Ping dropped from 30 ms to 7 ms after switching Wi-Fi to 80 MHz and requesting “upload cfg with IPv4” [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19231036] "So it's OK here" [Elektroda, cheetah, post #19230990]

Why it matters: Simple router tweaks often fix latency and speed problems without paid upgrades.

Quick Facts

• 5 GHz band supports 20/40/80 MHz widths on UPC Giga Connect Box [Elektroda, RussianDoggi, post #19230965] • Negotiated link rate hit 650 Mbps on 2×2 MIMO 80 MHz (802.11ac) [Elektroda, cheetah, post #19230990] • Real-world Wi-Fi throughput ≈ 470–500 Mbps with 80 MHz channels [Elektroda, cheetah, post #19230990] • Latency fell from 20-30 ms to 7 ms after IPv4 switch and channel change [Elektroda, RussianDoggi, post #19234905] • IPv6 profile adds CGNAT hop in Katowice, raising ping and blocking port-forwarding [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19231180]

How do I check whether my UPC Giga Connect Box is on IPv6 or IPv4?

Log into the router, open Administration → Information. If “DS-Lite” or “IPv6 profile” is shown, you are on IPv6; if “Bridge mode available” appears, you are on IPv4 [Elektroda, RussianDoggi, post #19231031]

Does Bridge mode kill my Wi-Fi network?

If you enable Bridge, the device works as modem only; Wi-Fi radios turn off. Keep Bridge disabled if you still need the built-in Wi-Fi [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19234881]

How can I force 80 MHz channels on the 5 GHz band?

  1. Router UI → Wireless → 5 GHz.
  2. Set Channel Width to 20/40/80 MHz.
  3. Manually pick a clear channel (e.g., 48 or 108) and save [Elektroda, cheetah, post #19230990]

What speeds should I expect after enabling 80 MHz?

A 2×2 MIMO client negotiated 650 Mbps and achieved 470–500 Mbps throughput [Elektroda, cheetah, post #19230990] 802.11ac theoretical max for 2×2 MIMO 80 MHz is 867 Mbps [IEEE, 2013].

Which tools help diagnose crowded Wi-Fi channels?

On Windows use InSSIDer; on Android use WiFi Analyzer. Capture one reading beside the router and another at the client for comparison [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #19230873]

Why does Speedtest show different pings on different servers?

Speedtest selects the nearest host by default. If it chooses a farther server, latency rises. Choosing the closest node gave a 7 ms result [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19234910]

Edge case: Speeds still 40 Mbps after all tweaks—what next?

Low downstream can indicate coax signal issues or local headend congestion. Record modem power levels, run a wired Speedtest, then open a service ticket with UPC support [Elektroda, sosarek, post #19223338]

Can I contact UPC without the contract holder’s login?

Yes. You may start chat unauthenticated, but agents still request the customer number or PESEL to verify the account [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19231098]

Will disabling IPv6 break websites that already use it?

No. Almost all sites still serve IPv4; disabling IPv6 simply removes unnecessary translation layers. "You will be able to do everything you have done so far" [Elektroda, bbartek93, post #19231161]

What is the quickest 3-step fix for high ping on UPC Giga Connect Box?

  1. Switch Wi-Fi to 5 GHz, width 80 MHz.
  2. Pick a clear channel (e.g., 48).
  3. Ask UPC chat to load IPv4 configuration. Users reported ping dropping to 7 ms after these steps [Elektroda, RussianDoggi, post #19234954]
