I got a reply from PR: that means they are doing it for our benefit, the mp3 format is obsolete, but they won't broadcast in another format. They don't give a damn about us and we have to dispose of our reception devices in the obsolete mp3 format.
Well, there are other radio stations that you can still listen to in any app and on any device.
"Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
According to previous announcements, we kindly remind you of the extinction of mp3 streams with the end of this month.
We would like to inform you that we have included "voice announcements" in the mp3 streams regarding the switching off of this technology, at the same time encouraging you to use the mobile applications and pages of the Polish Radio Portal.
The announcement can only be heard in the stream in mp3 technology, other streaming technologies do not have such an announcement added. They remain unchanged. Listeners receiving content via official sources will not hear the announcement
The mp3 streaming technology is not used in any official applications or on the Polish Radio Portal. Streams in this technology are downloaded/served to listeners by third parties with whom Polskie Radio has no partnership agreements. The official distribution channels of Polskie Radio content are mobile applications for devices running the Android and iOS systems as well as the Polskie Radio Portal.
Streaming mp3 files should be distinguished from static mp3 files, which stay with us. With static mp3 files, for example, we make podcasts or interviews available to listen to on our official websites. Streaming is responsible for making live content available in real time.
For questions from Listeners, you can refer to the explanation below:
"Changes in MP3 web streams: A step towards technological development
We would like to kindly inform you that on 31 March 2024 there will be a change in our web streams and the MP3 format will be phased out. This decision is the result of ongoing technological developments and the need to adapt to the changing needs of our listeners.
For years, the MP3 format has been a key standard in the digital music world. However, with advances in technology and the emergence of newer formats such as HLS and DASH, we have been faced with choices that will improve the sound quality and provide a better music experience for our users.
The switch off of MP3 streams marks a step forward in providing high quality sound and better playback options for our listeners. The new formats will enable us to deliver an even richer music experience.
We are confident that this change will have a positive effect for all our users and make them enjoy their favourite music even more.
Thank you for your understanding and support in these changes. We are grateful to our Listeners for their forbearance.
Polish Radio
Listeners calling and writing with questions need to be encouraged to use the modern streaming technologies available on the mobile application and on the pages of the Polish Radio Portal.
The switch-off is dictated by changes in technology and security as well as optimization of operating costs in these difficult times for our Company.
If you have knowledge of anyone else who should receive this technical information and is not on the list of recipients, please kindly pass it on.
We did a similar operation at the end of 2021 extinguishing the WMS/WMA streams, then the operation was painless.
Greetings Tom Tabor."
