Hi, I'm not sure if I'm asking in the right place but here it goes.
I recently was made aware of a 320 volt electric meter being installed by our local utility company. My question is how does a 320 volt meter on a 100/200 amp panel with 240 volts coming in from the pole benefit anyone? I have seen 320 meters on much higher rated panels and they always have up to 2, 200 amp service breakers along with the 100 amp service disconnect breaker, and have the voltage to match coming in from the pole.
The one I was asked about was on a standard service panel, 240 volts coming in, and the electrician installed 2, 125 amp breakers bridged together for a 250 amp service disconnect. And that breaker was the only disconnect. The home is approx 62 years old, probably newer wiring, but has nothing in that home that would ever draw 125 let alone 250 amps to pop that breaker. Being they put a 320 volt meter in, wouldn't that cause even further issues if something was trying to pop the breakers? To me, this set-up is a fire just waiting to happen. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
