What do I connect to a motor in order to have it perform?

Hello guys,

This may be a dumb question, but I'm trying to build my own watch winder so I need to buy a motor such as this one in the link, http://www.ebay.com/itm/Silver-Tone-TYC50-AC-100-127V-10RPM-Speed-50-60HZ-4W-Synchronous-Motor-/321668066949?hash=item4ae4e92e85:g:VggAAOSw~oFXDiAq . This will connect to a universal joint and then some sort of watch holder that it will spin. 

The wires on the motor are open to connect to anything, should I get some sort of outlet plug-in adapter to tie to the open end wires of the motor? It says it runs off of 100-127V ac so I figured I could plug it right into the wall. 

I would also like it to switch direction using a switch if that is possible, but I'm not sure how to integrate all of this together.

Should I do that or get some sort of control board to control the rotation of the motor?

Please help, I'm stuck!

That motor should be connected to 120VAC with a fuse in series. That particular motor cannot be reversed electrically.

If you want to change directions, you might be better off with a cheap stepper motor and arduino/driver. I'm guessing you could build this for $20-30 using Chinese sourced parts (Arduino, stepper/motor driver shield and small stepper motor). The software would take minutes to complete by modifying one of the example sketches for stepper motors.

I'm going to be doing the Arduino and stepper motor with a driver technique. Wouldn't the EM field from the motor effect the watch though? I don't want to ruin the watch, should I put some sort of Faraday cage around the motor, such as aluminum foil?

It is unlikely that the magnetic field around the motor will affect the watch. You only need a minimal amount of torque from the stepper to wind the watch so get the lowest torque stepper you can find. This will minimize the current and voltage requirements to drive the stepper and if the motor is properly constructed it will minimize the external magnetic flux.

I did a quick test with a couple of NEMA 17 motors (fairly high torque for a NEMA 17) and the magnetic flux at one inch away from the motor was minimal.

If you are still worried about this, aluminum foil will not help, I would suggest using a longer shaft on the winder to physically move the stepper away from watch. Any magnetic field will diminish rapidly as you move away from the motor.
