I have a Dayton Model No. 2M197, 12 Volt PM DC motor that is 1/35 HP, 2350 RPM. 3.7 full load amps. My question is, can I use an AC adapter from let's say a laptop computer. I found one that outputs 12 Volts and 4 Amps. I ran this motor off of my 12 Volt 4 Amp battery charger and it seems to run just fine. I would just like to find something to us that's a little less cumbersome. Any insight on this would be appreciated!

Yes. You can, The current rating and voltage ratings are acceptable. The ac adapter from laptop PS is AC-DC-DC converter. but It should be run in constant speed. So, if you need to control the speed you should create the control circuit.

Check the peak current when the motor starts, it is higher than the run current. If the power supply has over current shutdown, it may not start. A battery charger may not have that problem, it may just sag momentarily. So yes, but check that it starts a number of times if you can before you buy,

Hi Steven M.,

You can use that AC adapter on anything that can manage its capability to supply. However, using it with higher or lower rating that is over or under its capacity to withstand or handle may damage or will deliver improper operation.

In short, you can use it on those devices that have minor or little difference from its capability to supply, also you can still enjoy or have the desirable operation.
