How to Connect Arduino and TLP to Drive Series IGBTs Without Pulse Transformer or Extra PSU

Hi i a need to drive a series of IGBT using arduino and TLP , but i am doubtful about the common emitter ground  link of IGBT and TLP. Kindly suggest me a design without pulse transformer and separate power supplies.

Hi Jacob-The TLP series is an isolated driver- and for good reason- to keep the high power (and possibly high voltage) stuff separate from the control circuitry. You will need a separate supply for the gate drive.  this is not terribly complicated, though. You don't need much (average) current to drive an IGBT gate, so a very small isolated DC-DC converter will work.  As a starting point, take a look at an SPU01L-15.  You can power it from the Arduino.-Rick.  

Thank you Rick,          I am not sure about the availability of that dc dc converter. Can i use separate dc sources for the output power supply of TLP , how about a pulse transformer .Apart from what you have mentioned the problem i faced is the emitter ground of IGBT, since i had some back to back IGBT connections with feedback diodes. it looked like a short when connected to a common ground 

Hi Jacob-The SPU01L-15  is in stock at Arrow, Digi-Key, Chip 1 Stop, Mouser, Allied, Online Components, and Master, so it shouldn't be hard to get one.Are you suggesting a pulse transformer as an alternative to the TLP?  It may be possible, but I'll need to know more about your circuit. If you're suggesting a pulse transformer as a way of getting isolated power for the TLP, that's probably not a good idea.If you can post a schematic of what you've got so far I can offer more help.-Rick

Probably not.  The TLP is an isolated driver, and the pulse transformer also provides isolation. You can use a non-isolated driver to drive the pulse transformer.In my opinion, pulse transformers are much trickier than an opto-coupled driver.  As its name implies, the pulse transformer can only provide a pulse, while the opto driver can be constantly on.  Can you provide more information about your circuit?  I may be able to offer a better solution.-Rick

The circuit consists of back to back connected igbt with fly back diodes ..so now i am tryng with isolated dc supplies to each igbt to avoid any common ground problem...i left the idea of using pulse transformer since it is diminishing my pulses.  The driver circuit is getting pulses from controller at the input of tlp and at the output separate dc sources are powering the igbt gate through tlp.

One of my more recent designs uses two back-to-back IGBT's with Copack diodes as an AC switch.  I used an FOD3184 optocoupled driver and the SPU01L-15.  It worked great!
I have the emitters tied together and to the negative side of the DC-DC converter. I have a 10 ohm resistor from the output of the FOD3184 to each of the gates.  I added an SS14 Schottky diode across each of the resistors to act as a Miller clamp. Very simple and very reliable. I'm switching 240 volts, 50 amps at a 19.5Khz rate.

You mean multiple AC sources?  Just use one DC-DC converter (plus one driver) per IGBT pair.-Rick
