Mounting ECU Next to Motorcycle Starter Motor—Risk of Interference or Damage?

Hi all,
Newbie question but I could not find an answer to my question anywhere so thought I might ask the experts.
I have mounted an ECU on a motorcycle but the only spot I can find to mount it neatly is right next to the starter motor. I have been told that this will cause problems -something to do with the large amount of copper, working as a inductive antenna?
The ECU receives signals from several sensors and then regulates the amount of fuel to the injectors.
How likely is this to cause problems? Any advice much appreciated!

Off the top of my head I doubt that will be a problem. The ECU should be in a heatsinked metal enclosure, which should minimize radiated emissions getting into it.Conducted noise (on the power supply and sensor lines), may however, be a problem. Some modern bikes have a SMPS on the alternator, which will supply the ECU, these should isolate the ECU from large  voltage transients, depends on what your bike is, and if the ECU is a retrofit, which I assume it is.The two things that are likely to cause problems are excess temperature rise (bad placement of the unit), and if you don't have a SMPS on your alternator,load dumps/alternator noise etc.The starter motor obviously only operates briefly, when it will draw quite a bit of current, voltage drop caused by this must be accounted for (the ECU will possibly have an onboard Switch Mode Power Supply with a broad input voltage capability). The ECU must also be isolated from very large voltage spikes (conducted noise), which will be present on the power supply, a well designed ECU will take both issues into account.

The ECU I have installed is known as a "piggy back" ECU in that it works in conjunction with the standard ECU. It's contained within a hard plastic case rather than metal and all the sensor ad power lines are arranged to not be in close proximity to the starter motor.It's a very modern motorcycle so I'm sure it has all the protection in place against voltage spikes and so on. I have protected it from excess heat so I'm not concerned about that.My concern came from a motorcycle forum where someone pointed out that there are never any important electronics placed in close proximity to the starter motor due to the presence of the large amounts of magnets and copper but I was a little dubious as to how this could cause problems.Cheers.Tim
