    Hello

Does anyone know of any projects using the Raspberry Pi as a home monitoring system ?

    I am interested in:

    - the use of cheap USB cameras or IP cameras,
    - web panel for viewing cameras
    - taking photos
    - video recording
    - motion detection on the basis of video changes
    - recording of video upon detection of movement
    - taking a photo upon detection of movement.

Thanks in advance for any links, leads you find.

    Regards
    Mariusz

Have your colleague look for Raspberry Pi compatible cameras. As for the Raspberry pi model, I recommend B because it has an internet connection, and the software is the best thing to look for something on the internet (a program that creates a simple page on the Raspberry Pi that has a live image from the camera or refreshed every 1sec)

This is a general explanation of what and how to do with this camera.

    :)

Does it have to be on a Raspberry? Is this computing power enough for a few cameras? Is this to be a thesis or a device for continuous operation? If the latter, I would consider a dedicated recorder.

Will a dedicated DVR instantly send you photos to gmail or hangout and Picasa when motion is detected? Is it cheaper? Or more energy efficient? ;-) Raspberry can easily handle several cameras with motion applications :-) And you can expand the functionality as you like. I used to use a dedicated device with a predetermined and very limited functionality. I would not make that mistake again ;-)

I was more concerned with video recording, what resolution would it be and how many fps ? from several cameras simultaneously.

I have not done this type of testing. Photographs of a moving object are sufficient for me. I don't save video to disk, at most a few - a few dozen frames (jpeg 640x480) when motion is detected.

And why not? Complete open source DVR system http://www.zoneminder.com/ I don't know if the raspberry will pull this off. I used to try to compile it from source but it's a massacre, each version is only compatible with a specific video codec version. Plus/minus 1 minor codec version number causes compilation errors. I gave up on compiling and use something simpler http://motion.sourceforge.net/ In combination with MotionBrowser and Cambozola (to watch JPEG streams under IE, as FF has built-in support) it has worked perfectly for me for over a year. At my place it works with a 4xBT878 DVR card, previously it worked with a 1xBT878 TV card, I assume any Video4Linux device (even USB) will work. Additionally, the software embraces external JPEG streams from IP cameras. There are quite a lot of possibilities for video stream customisation, motion detection, recording, video proxy. I recently hooked up the free programme "IP Camera Viewer" under WP7 and I can view on my phone.

Motion works great for me too, and on a Raspberry ( RaSp485berry project ). For the time being on a single USB camera, but if anyone would like to contribute to the development of the project (support for several cameras at the same time - it's possible, but I haven't had time to play - test, please contact me :-)
