Hi, I have browsed through several posts and came to the conclusion that the PIR motion sensor is not able to detect a passing car and the halogen lamp will not light up. I have a question if it is possible to modify these sensors in any way, for example by mounting an IR diode whose light beam reflected from a car could activate the sensor or direct the diode to the sensor and a passing car would cut the beam. How do you see it?

Standard IR LEDs emit a completely different infrared range to that to which a PIR detector responds.
A microwave detector, a so-called infrared barrier, or a road-mounted induction loop, for example, can be used to detect a moving vehicle.

I wonder if I should try using a phototransistor instead of a pyrometer. Would this then pass the test

All you need is a simple reflection sensor with an IR diode signal transmitter at 36kHz modulated 1kHz and next to it in a tube placed IR reflectors and behind it NE567.
I made such a circuit with 4 diodes connected in series with 300mA current and 36kHz pulses with 25% fill. The resulting range was about 10m for a person and 15m for a car. There were no false pulses when the receiver was placed in 10cm of 1/2" steel tubing next to the transmitting diodes.

It is an interesting conclusion that a colleague has come to, unfortunately contradicting what we observe every day and what we fight against as an undesirable phenomenon in alarm systems. Maybe it is enough to answer what such a sensor reacts to.
    kind regards
