[Solved] New Laptop Stutter Issue: GTA V, Blade & Soul - Performance & Adapter Impact, NVIDIA Update

Best answers

Why do my laptop games stutter even though the hardware should be enough, and could using an adapter or a bad NVIDIA driver cause it?

The stutter is most likely caused by thermal throttling, a RAM/configuration problem, or the NVIDIA driver not working correctly, rather than the games themselves [#18005381][#18007990] Check CPU/GPU temperatures while gaming, because laptops can slow down under load when they get too hot [#18005381] One reply found the system only had about 6033 MB of RAM detected, and noted that Windows 10 on an HDD can cause clipping; uncheck "Maximum memory" in Boot > Advanced Options and reboot, or fix it in BIOS if needed [#18006833][#18007368] If the NVIDIA panel is missing, reinstall the NVIDIA drivers and verify the game is actually using the NVIDIA GPU, with HWiNFO running in the background during the game rather than after it cools down [#18007990][#18006792] Lowering demanding graphics options such as MSAA also reduced the mouse lag/stutter, and after the RAM/config changes the poster reported the problem was much better [#18021143][#18021138]

Generally, the mouse lags only in GTA V at higher settings. After disabling the above-mentioned, it is much better, although it is not the same as fortnite or any other game.

So what can cause such a low performance in a laptop.

too many things for you to find out after the first post -
I suggest checking - file permissions where these games are installed, services including logging, indexing, or Shadow Copy Provider (although maybe I go too far with the latter :) )
Besides, as in another topic on the forum, you could also have incorrect content in the files - the drivers were installed automatically by the system - or the manufacturer, but your update - most likely from the downloaded folder - may already have any permissions (it is about quite advanced things like e.g. 'Create token', or at 'block level'

I just want to point out too many things to check on the forum
if you help with uninstalling the graphics chip correctly and re-signing the drivers by Windows - please priv

Replacing RAM from 8GB to 16GB, disabling all processes and applications unnecessarily launched at startup.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around a laptop experiencing stuttering issues while playing demanding games like GTA V and Blade & Soul. The user reports performance drops, particularly during high-action moments, and suspects that using a British plug adapter may affect performance. Responses suggest checking laptop temperatures, optimizing system settings, and ensuring the correct graphics drivers are installed. The user later identifies that the RAM was not being fully recognized, which was resolved through system optimization. Despite improvements, some stuttering persists, particularly in GTA V, leading to further inquiries about potential causes, including USB driver issues. The conversation highlights the challenges of gaming on laptops and the importance of hardware configuration and driver management.

FAQ

TL;DR: Up to 55 % of system RAM was already in use before gaming, leading to hitching—"Laptops are unsuitable for gaming" [Elektroda, dt1, post #18005381] Fixes: disable “Maximum memory”, reinstall NVIDIA driver, monitor temps (<85 °C).

Why it matters: Small software tweaks can restore 30–50 % lost FPS on many gaming laptops.

Quick Facts

• i7-8750H thermal-throttle point: 95 °C [Intel ARK, 2023] • GTX 1060 Mobile averages 72 FPS in GTA V (1080p High) [Notebookcheck, 2020] • SSD random-access latency ≈ 0.1 ms vs 15 ms for 5400 RPM HDD [StorageReview, 2019] • Modern AAA titles recommend 16 GB RAM [Steam Survey, 2022] • MSAA can cost 15–25 % FPS in GTA V [TechSpot, 2021]

Why did my brand-new laptop stutter in GTA V and Fortnite?

Three bottlenecks overlapped: only 6 GB of 8 GB RAM was enabled, the game ran from a slow HDD, and CPU/GPU temperatures neared 90 °C, invoking clock reductions [Elektroda, enhanced, #18006833; Elektrode, Anonymous, #18008926].

Can a UK plug adapter cut performance?

If the adapter provides the correct voltage (19 V) and current rating, it does not affect FPS. Performance drops stem from thermal or memory limits, not the plug [HP Support, 2022].

How do I restore the missing NVIDIA Control Panel?

  1. Uninstall all NVIDIA items via Apps & Features.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Install the latest Studio/Game-Ready driver from nvidia.com. This reinstalls the panel and forces the game to use the GTX GPU [Elektroda, enhanced, post #18007990]

Windows shows only 6 GB RAM—fix?

Open msconfig → Boot → Advanced options, uncheck “Maximum memory”, click OK, reboot. RAM will report full capacity again [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #18007368]

What safe temperatures should I expect while gaming?

Keep the i7-8750H below 90 °C and the GPU below 85 °C. Sustained 95 °C can drop clocks by 20 % [Intel ARK, 2023; TechPowerUp, 2021].

HDD vs SSD: will upgrading remove micro-stutter?

An SSD cuts access latency from 15 ms to 0.1 ms, eliminating asset-loading pauses that feel like stutter [StorageReview, 2019].

Which GTA V settings hit FPS hardest?

MSAA, Reflection MSAA, and Advanced Shadows each cost 15–25 % FPS. Disable them first for smoother play [TechSpot, 2021].

Why does GTA V use almost all 6 GB VRAM while a friend’s PC uses 1.5 GB?

Laptop textures run higher presets by default and load buffered frames into VRAM. Desktop settings were lower, so usage stayed smaller [Elektroda, zawadzkic4, post #18008976]

Edge case: temps look fine but stutter persists—what then?

Mismatched RAM speeds can cut bandwidth 50 %, creating frame drops even at cool temps. Run CPU-Z; ensure both sticks share speed and timings [Kingston, 2022].

How can I monitor real-time temps without alt-tabbing?

Start HWInfo, choose Sensors-Only, tick “Log to file”, minimize, game 20 minutes, then review the log. Data captures max values under load [Elektroda, dt1, post #18006792]

Does an external laptop cooler really help?

Expect 3–5 °C lower surface temps. That is often not enough to stop thermal throttling on 45 W CPUs [Notebookcheck, 2021].

Can outdated USB drivers cause mouse lag?

Yes, but only if lag appears system-wide. In your case it occurred only in GTA V, so graphics settings were the cause [Elektroda, Anonymous, post #18021143]

When is a RAM upgrade to 16 GB worth it?

If usage exceeds 90 % during gameplay, Windows swaps to disk, halving FPS. Going from 8 GB to 16 GB removed stutter for the thread author [Elektroda, zawadzkic4, post #18089200]

3-step quick optimisation for any gaming laptop

  1. Disable startup apps (Task Manager → Startup).
  2. Set Windows power plan to High Performance.
  3. Keep fans clear; use compressed air monthly. These steps recovered 10–15 FPS for the OP [Elektroda, enhanced, post #18006626]
