I see both of them have a fuse and even a varistor, not bad, maybe both of them have also a crude filter made from choke and two electrolytic capacitors (it's common in Tuya products), but I can't see any further differences on the board, photos are not too high quality.
Which BK7231 are they using and which power metering chips?
And which power supply chips (to get 5V/12V from 220V AC or should I rather say 340V DC or so)

I have had 4 Aubess plugs die in 2 years. I wonder how this GRIER would have performed. It's a shame because the Aubess energy meter was quite accurate.

What's broken in them? Maybe a capacitor? If you have any still damaged I would love to see.

I have no idea what is broken.
    1. when plugged in the led does not light up blue, but when you press the button you can hear some snapping inside.
2.Quite possibly dead it doesn't give any sign. Nothing happens when you press the button
    3. apparently works but only for a few seconds, a minute. Can switch off on its own. Resetting the settings did not help.
    4. probably died after six months and was thrown away.

EDIT: by the way, I am looking for some replacements for the ones that died. Also Chinese with a reasonably accurate energy meter. Is there any recommended brand?
EDIT2: I took it apart, the method with the hairdryer went quite smoothly although one plug body was mashed. There appears to be an obviously swollen capacitor in 2. Replacement will bring such a plug back to life or would anything else need to be done?

There is a good chance that the plug will work properly after replacing the swollen capacitor.

2 of the sockets were able to be brought back to life. The 3 where the capacitor was not deflated unfortunately continue to have the same symptoms as before the capacitor replacement. It is detected and flashes pairing, but won't add itself to the program. It's like it doesn't connect to the network and sometimes it won't turn on at all. These capacitors some small came (smaller than the original ones) I think I read something wrong in the description.... but so far they work :) I wonder how long it will live.

Topic summary

The discussion compares the quality and performance of two 16A smart plugs: GIRIER and Aubess. Both devices feature a fuse, varistor, and likely a basic EMI filter composed of a choke and electrolytic capacitors, typical in Tuya-based products. Key unknowns include the specific BK7231 microcontroller variant, power metering ICs, and power supply design for converting 220V AC to low voltage DC. Users report reliability issues with Aubess plugs, including LED failure, intermittent operation, and complete device death within months to two years. Disassembly revealed swollen capacitors as a common failure point, with capacitor replacement restoring functionality in some units, though network connectivity problems persisted in others. The Aubess energy meter is noted for accuracy despite durability concerns. Requests for alternative Chinese smart plugs with reliable energy metering were also made.
