Avoid opening if possible, but Poundland still have TYWE2S on shelves in exactly the same packaging as new stock which are WB2S based
Plug it in and scan Wifi for nearby clients, or put in AP-mode to make it more visible and even connect to it.
Looking for the MAC, the ESP based devices

    50:02:91:XX:XX:XX = Espressif Inc. (TYWE2S)
Opening is not too difficult but it is plastic and easily deformed. Start with craft knife or finger nail hearing "cracking" noise asyou go all the way around.

Cutting hole in case to get access to programming interface is a very good trick, I have already used it in the case NAS-WR01W/NAS-WR07W plugs:

Are there any date codes on the PCB or case, or the packaging? Are they the same in case of both versions?
