As I get quite a few questions via private messages, I’ve decided to write down the most important points in one place, in the hope that it might be of help to someone else.
1. I was retrofitting a traditional, pre-existing installation. The changes relating to lighting automation mainly involved replacing bistable switches with monostable (bell-type) switches and fitting ROP-02 receivers into the switch boxes. They have the handy feature of being controllable using both buttons and Exty transmitters. In this way, any existing traditional circuit can be turned into a controllable circuit using just this one junction block (I can still switch it on with the same push-button, but I can also control it simultaneously using any other element of the system). No chiselling required!
2. Integration with Satel is done in the simplest possible way, namely by connecting Exty transmitters/receivers to the physical inputs/outputs on the control panel.
3. The lighting simulation is also based on Zamel components. To put it simply:
- I convert the 12V signal from the alarm control panel indicating that the system is armed into high voltage via the PEM-01/012 relay
- this activates the control input on the ZCM-31 programmer (which tells me when the sun rises and sets, and allows me to programme a night-time break, etc.)
- this, in turn, activates the PCM-10 timer relay, where I programme the switch-on times for the two lighting zones independently (so that the lighting changes rather than staying the same all the time)
- finally, the signal for the Exta Free receivers is sent via the RNM-10 transmitter (some of the lights are on one channel, some on the other)
So, to summarise:
- Arming the control unit supplies power to all these modules
- On the ZCM programmer, I set when the simulation is to start in relation to sunrise and sunset
- the timer relay determines how the lights should switch when the simulation is active
- the RNM transmitter actually switches them on and off (in monostable mode)
All in all, it works out cheaper than some advanced control modules and works very well
4. Other examples of integration with the control panel
- An Exty transmitter connected to the appropriate Satel output switches off all lights when the system is armed
- Similarly, a transmitter connected to another output switches on all the lights when the alarm is triggered (the control panel allows you to set the output to flash, so when connected in monostable mode, the lights also flash in the set pattern)
- I won’t reveal the other solutions, but you can have a play around
5. Control via the Harmony remote is based on the RTI-01 translator. I actually consider this to be the least successful component of the Exta Free range; it can freeze up and play up for no reason, although it generally works

With Harmony, you basically need to add any device that doesn’t conflict with others you’re actually using, then adjust the descriptions accordingly and map the signals from the individual buttons when programming the RTI-01.
Overall, as you can see, there are plenty of possibilities. The only problem is the initial programming of the whole system, as you have to spend half a day running from switch to switch. Help from a second person is essentially essential, and you need to plan it all out properly on paper first. The whole thing cost next to nothing (at least compared to competitors’ solutions) and has been working flawlessly for three years now...
