As far as I can see the SM028 does not have a connector for an external antenna, but the Ai-WB2-M1-I, for example, does - below the documentation, you can take a look at the schematic, among other things:

I did not need to mount an antenna. Range at a dozen/twenty metres (I did not test longer distances) without an external antenna.
