I bought the Mi Smart LED Bulb Essential light bulbs.

They need to be on all the time for it to work from the phone etc. What is the cheapest way to turn the sockets into ones that can be controlled manually but also from the phone?
AI: What sockets or switches do you currently have? Are they standard sockets or are they already some smart solutions?

Do you have a dedicated app for control or a standard app (Tuya, SmartLife, ...) If standard, you can buy a switch and link it to the bulb in the app. If dedicated - check its capabilities. Maybe it has something like an additional control. But in general with a dedicated app this can be a problem.

I suspect they either need to install whole smart sockets new, or add some sort of module to the existing ones that turns them on after Wi-Fi....

    The electrical installation doesn't matter.
Whole new smart sockets - that's probably the cheapest way to go, But then the bulb will work like a normal (non-controlled) one.

It does - so don't write nonsense!
For example, lighting switches in most cases require an N connection which is missing from many older installation boxes - that's just for starters and there are many more problems/connection impossibilities.

Topic summary

The discussion addresses converting standard electrical sockets to support both manual and phone control for Mi Smart LED Bulb Essential bulbs, which require constant power to enable app control. The user employs Google Home and Mi Home apps for device management. Suggested solutions include purchasing compatible smart switches that integrate with these apps to control the bulbs remotely while maintaining manual operation. The electrical installation is approximately 20 years old and in good condition, but older wiring may lack a neutral (N) connection, complicating smart switch installation. Replacing sockets with fully smart sockets is considered a possible but potentially more expensive solution, and may cause the bulbs to function like standard non-smart bulbs. The importance of verifying the electrical system's compatibility, especially regarding neutral wiring, is emphasized to avoid installation issues.
