  • Lichtenberg pattern burner
Hello, I would like to boast of a very simple but interesting device from the category: what to do with an old microwave ;)
I decided to diversify my apartment a bit with a new table, it fell on an oak table with a lightning pattern, so I was forced to develop a tool for this.

The most easily accessible microwave transformer was used as the power source.
The electrodes were placed on long handles, I did not want to have cables close to my body, as far as I know the insulation is up to 1000V for higher voltage, I did not find in stores, except for the possibility of using ignition cables from the car.
The housing is an ordinary surface-mounted box.
I used a fuse protection prophylactically.
The housing has been additionally screwed to a thick plywood base to prevent accidental shock. from the bottom of the housing protruded screws screwed to the transformer, it was enough to put the device on a metal table and the tragedy was ready.
In the video, I initially have the wrong cables screwed on, please do not pay attention to them, I just grabbed them to put the cube in the right place ;)
The chair was used by chance, I had nothing wooden in my workshop, the old varnish that soaked into the wood prevented me from firing the pattern.

In order for the pattern to burn out more easily, the wood should be soaked in a solution of water and, in my case, caustic soda, but you can use other electrically conductive mixtures, I just had soda on hand. At the beginning of the movie, you can see that the bow was a burnt spot, not a lightning bolt. It was the fault of too wet wood, you should experimentally find out how wet the wood must be.

A simple but very dangerous device, it should be remembered at every step.

I am posting an overview video of the construction, I am not Polański, so I apologize in advance for the quality.

And here is one of the uses of the burner, a hammer for my forge "

Show photos of the device from the inside ;)
Do you have the option to measure the current consuming the transformer at the time of firing?

The hammer handle looks cool, can you show the pictures?

I have everything in the workshop. When I have a moment in the evening, I will eat it and take pictures ? the device is visible from the inside in the film, but if necessary, I do not see any obstacles. The current will also measure today, I have such a possibility.

The effect is very nice, but has such a hammer not lost its durability? I know that tools are not usually decorated in such a way, and in the film it is more for show, but I wonder how much it influenced the endurance (e.g. making myself such a handrail or a chair) :) )

I wonder how you get rid of the electrolyte remnants that soaked into the surface of the wood? Are you indifferent, grinding to zero when finishing?
Sodium hydroxide is a very aggressive substance, and unfortunately it does not evaporate with water. In the long run, it will cause changes in the color / structure of the wood. And with moisture, it will create a caustic solution again. Who would like, dressed in shorts, to sit on such a stool on a hot day?

As for durability, there is no problem. The arch only burns the layer of wood on the surface.
Regarding the neutralization of the solution, this measure is not normally used, there are a lot of other problem-free methods. I chose one only for the film, because I had one in my workshop. For those who are patient, only water can be used, but the electrodes must be much closer together when burning.
From what I knew of no means, I was not taken care of. Most of these effects end up under the resin layer to increase the effect, so the problem solves itself.

You can use a concentrated solution to clean old furniture before renovation and somehow there is no problem with discoloration, as long as it is rinsed well with water.

This hammer dagger looks fabulous for an electrician he he :-)

Exactly. Too high a concentration causes the wood to turn red. It is even used in some situations ?

Not all types of trees discolor, others brighten if they get darker than the light :-)

I would install an additional switch in this device, a "trigger" in the handle of one of the electrodes. Any low voltage low power transformer and relay with coil voltage like Uwy transformer. In the handle, the NO monostable button is activated by means of a motor relay. This construction is dangerous, and using the switch on the housing while holding the electrodes in your hands is asking for trouble

In assumptions, I was going to solve it like that, but at the end it turned out as you can see, that's why I used such long electrode handles, before starting it, I always untangle the cable first and move it as far away from my hand as possible. In addition, in the workshop I have a socket operated from the foot pedal, so it can be considered an additional security, and I try to use this contraption after it, in total, I will probably throw a video on the channel from the construction and operation of this extension cord with a switch in the leg.

Regarding security, I could not forgive myself (until the admin removes ;)

    - Dear friend, this matter is child's play, and I was convinced that you would easily guess what happened. Holmes reached into the pocket of his coat, pulled out his watch, and looked at the dial.
"Since, as you probably remember, we have tea with Madame Taussaud in half an hour, I will try to explain this case to you in a few words.

    - I consider meeting this crazy old woman a pure waste of time. - I grunted, annoyed at the malicious remark. Indeed, he could excuse himself from being malignant.

    - Well, she is definitely an eccentric person. I remind you, however, that many of her friends came to us on her recommendation, thanks to which we live quite comfortably without worrying about financial resources - Holmes slammed the cover of the watch - and back to the matter - the only thing that somehow explains that he was still alone. you have not guessed the solution to the puzzle is your poor knowledge of electrical technology.

    - You can't know everything. I studied medicine, not crazy inventions like not trying this one ... like im, Tesla or Edison.

    - Probably. But it was precisely thanks to the fact that Mr. Nikola once explained to me, of course, briefly the basics of electricity, that the mysterious death of Baron Pavlik and his son turned out not to be too difficult for me ... frock coat and regarded it critically.
    - I think it's time to go to the tailor ... My clothes are slowly starting to resemble the rags of a tramp rather than an educated gentleman. As Holmes said this, he must have wondered whether the appearance of Mrs. Taussaud in a slightly disheveled frock coat might still be considered a harmless quirk or would it simply be seen as a symptom of sheer sloppyness.

    - So what happened? Their bodies were found in the ruins of the baron's laboratory. Strange patterns remained around the bodies lying on the wooden floor - possibly burned or otherwise made there. Inspector Lestrade suggested that perhaps these patterns were created during a fire, but that has never been seen before, I recalled, indeed curious.

    - I will explain this interesting detail to you in a moment. However, I must start with the fact that the baron has been working on a device based on the invention of my friend Nikola for some time. It is a kind of apparatus - never mind the technical details that the baron explained to me twice. But I must admit that even if he explained it to me two more times - I probably wouldn't understand it either. This apparatus was to generate an electric current of enormous power.

    - I don't understand, what is this playing with life for? During the Tesla shows that we saw together, I was convinced that one of his lightning bolts would be struck in a moment and that would be the end of his crazy experiences. Rather, every normal person avoids lightning for his own good.

    - Ha. I admit that the baron did not seem entirely sound to me. Imagine, he had the idea of building an apparatus for cooking food with the help of electricity. Can you imagine it, Watson? A housewife heating the soup with electric lightning closed in some apparatus made of plates and wires? We will probably never see this invention since the baron is dead.

    - And very well. If some crazy inventions hadn't been made, the world would have been a better place.

    - In any case, mankind will not recognize electric pots. Coming back to the matter - that day the baron was just testing his apparatus for generating electrical discharges. Of course, he was aware of the imminent danger, which is why he made special, long handles to which electric wires were attached. So that he can perform experiments while being at a safe distance.
And probably nothing bad would have happened if - as is usually the case in such cases - a minor oversight.

"He must have miscalculated the length of those ... handles?"

    - Oh no. He just calculated it with a fair margin, I suppose. Unfortunately, entering his laboratory, he did not close the door behind him. While the baron was busy with his electrical experiences, his 7-year-old son slipped into the room unnoticed. And worse, he had a toy in his hand - a rubber bulb to spray the water.
Oh - he wanted to joke my father and suddenly sprinkle him with water ...

    - Today's upbringing of young people leaves much to be desired. In my time, children did not disturb my parents at work. I cannot imagine going into my father's office without permission.

    - Times changes. Today's youth is disheveled, they wear long hair and inappropriate clothes. Imagine, dear friend, the day before I saw a young man whom I initially mistook for a woman. Humanity is on the decline ...
Holmes had put on his frock coat and was now brushing pollen off it.

    - By unfortunate coincidence, when a toddler crept behind his father's back, he was operating his electrical devices. You must know, dear Watson, that in such experiments it is extremely important not to perform them in wet places because - imagine - moisture is an excellent conductor of electricity.

    - Indeed - storms usually go hand in hand with rain. - I said.

    - So when the boy unexpectedly sprayed the water mist on his father, he was immediately shocked by electricity from his camera. Of course, the same thing happened to the child as well.
Worse still, electrical discharges from cables dropped by the victim caused a fire that ravaged the laboratory.

    - And those weird patterns on the floor? I asked.

    - Imagine that I recently saw in a book published by a mathematician from Göttingen drawings of such formulas. They arise when electric current flows through the material during electrical discharges. When the baron dropped the electric wires from his hand, they caused such amazing patterns on the floor ...
Watson! Let's go - it is not proper to be late for a tea party. Holmes took his umbrella off its rack and pointed it at me like a sword.

Would you be able to send some pics of the construction of this burner up close, generally speaking, the transformer is all about

Topic summary

A user showcased a homemade Lichtenberg pattern burner created from an old microwave transformer, designed to etch lightning patterns onto an oak table. The device features long-handled electrodes for safety, a surface-mounted box housing, and a fuse for protection. Discussion points included the internal construction of the device, current measurement during operation, and concerns about the durability of the tools used. Participants also discussed methods for neutralizing sodium hydroxide residues from the wood surface and suggested safety improvements, such as adding a trigger switch to the electrodes. The user confirmed that the burning process only affects the wood's surface layer and shared that the final effects are often sealed under resin.
