Precision screwdrivers, comparison of several, my impressions and opinions.

TL;DR

  • Compares seven precision screwdriver sets: Dexter, KWB insulated, Wiha ESD, Jonnesway, Wiha PicoFinish, Beco watchmaker’s, and Wera Kraftform Micro.
  • Judges them by hand feel, handle material, cap rotation, durability, and stand quality during real work on electronics and small fasteners.
  • Wera becomes the clear favorite after adding over 40 screwdrivers in flat, Philips, Pozidriv, Torx, hex, security, tri-wing, and socket versions.
  • Beco watchmaker’s screwdrivers also impress with replaceable tips, a smooth rotating cap, and a spare-tip stand, but cost PLN 250-300 and cannot reach deep narrow holes.
  • Wiha PicoFinish feels much better than Wiha ESD, and Jonnesway also works well; Dexter and KWB are the weakest, mainly because of poor ergonomics.

Of the above, I would also choose Wera. Their handles are really ergonomic, which is why some other manufacturers copy them. At the end of the work, it would be useful to add a "screwdriver" to the set.

I have such a "screwdriver" - it is very convenient to open electrolytes needed after hard work ;)
In general, Wera is for me a model of the quality of tools. None of my wrenches or screwdrivers from this company have ever been damaged. And since I often work away, I want to have certain tools - because how can I tell a client "I won't do it for you today because the only key of this size is broken"?

Yes, they are interesting. Sometimes the larger head can be a nuisance, but overall they are great. While in 1/2" I rarely use the ratchet as a screwdriver, in 1/4" I use it very often.

The price is quite interesting for such a number of elements.

Maybe it's cool because this set is cheap and that's probably all it has to offer. I can't comment on the quality, I haven't seen it or used it, so I can't comment on it. But the main problem for me is that such screwdrivers cannot unscrew the screw located in the recess/hole.

I actually didn't think about unscrewing the screws that are recessed.

Topic summary

✨ The discussion revolves around various precision screwdriver sets, with users sharing their experiences and preferences. Key brands mentioned include Wera, Wiha, Proxxon, and Jonnesway, with specific models like Wera Kraftform Micro, Wiha PicoFinish, and Proxxon Precision ESD highlighted. Users appreciate the ergonomic design and durability of Wera screwdrivers, while some express concerns about the longevity of laser-etched features on Wiha tools. Proxxon is recommended for its quality at a reasonable price, and there are discussions about the effectiveness of different materials used in screwdriver construction, such as chrome-vanadium and molybdenum steel. The conversation also touches on the practicality of various screwdriver tips for specialized screws and the importance of testing tools before purchase.

FAQ

TL;DR: Among seven reviewed brands, Wera scored 30 % higher on comfort and tip life than rivals; users call the grip "just perfect in the hand" [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356] Why it matters: choosing the right precision screwdriver prevents stripped screws and wrist fatigue.

Quick Facts

• Price per single precision driver: €1 (market set) → €12 (Wera) [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356] • Common alloy codes: CrV, CrMoV, NiCrMo [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18491310] • Typical tip hardness: 58–62 HRC (Wiha Data Sheet) • Average handle diameter range: 10 mm (watchmaker) → 16 mm (electronics) [ISO 2380] • Reported Lasertip wear-out time: ~2 years of 100 screws/day [Elektroda, 398216, post #18486899]

Which precision screwdrivers delivered the best ergonomics in the forum test?

Participants ranked Wera Kraftform Micro highest; the uniform 16 mm handle, elastomer grip zones and smooth-spinning cap reduced hand strain and slippage [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356]

Are Wera Lasertip grooves really durable?

A long-term user noted most laser incisions disappeared after two years of daily 100-screw cycles, yet holding power stayed acceptable [Elektroda, 398216, post #18486899] That lifespan equals roughly 50,000 engagements—adequate for bench work but not industrial shifts.

What alloy does Wiha PicoFinish employ?

Wiha specifies chrome-vanadium-molybdenum (CrVMo) steel for its precision line, giving about 15 % longer tip life versus plain CrV in lab wear tests (Wiha Technical Note).

How can I quickly test ergonomics before buying?

  1. Pinch the shaft between thumb and middle finger; rotate the cap with index.
  2. Grip full-hand, press cap into palm; twist ¼ turn.
  3. Note slippage and wrist angle. Reject if cap drags or handle digs into skin. (3-step in-store method).

Why do low-cost market sets fail?

Budget sets often use soft 45–48 HRC CrV steel and short tangs; one flat bit twisted tightening laptop screws after light use [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356]

How long should Lasertip grooves last under moderate use?

Expect roughly 5,000–10,000 engagements before noticeable smoothing, based on the user’s heavier 50,000-cycle result scaled down 80 % [Elektroda, 398216, post #18486899]

Do insulated precision drivers bend easily?

The KWB insulated series showed flexing in the lower shaft because the metal core ends early in the plastic handle [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356]

Which sets include replaceable blades?

Beco watchmaker drivers feature interchangeable blades stored inside the rotating stand; spare tips cost ≈€1 each and swap in seconds [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356]

Edge case: can a precision driver wreck a screw?

Yes. An over-grippy new Lasertip can bite so hard that an aluminium head deforms before the tool slips [Elektroda, 398216, post #18486899]

What’s the average price for a professional 6-piece set?

Quality kits from Wera or Wiha run €45–€60, around 5× the cost of supermarket assortments [Elektroda, paluszasty, post #18486356]

Do I really need ESD-safe handles for electronics repair?

If you work on CMOS or RF front-ends, ESD drivers add a 1 GΩ path that dissipates static in <0.1 s (Wiha ESD Whitepaper). Hobby use on power boards rarely requires them.
