GPS locator for scooters from Lidl

A.J.Electronics 16644 35

TL;DR

  • Built a GPS locator-based security upgrade for a Lidl electric scooter with seat and basket, adding remote on/off control and a phone-charging outlet.
  • The locator’s remote fuel cut-off drives an electronic kill switch through T2/T3 transistors, while an LM2596 step-down converter supplies 12 V and powers the charger.
  • The locator accepts 9–90 V, the scooter battery is 36 V, charged is about 42 V, and the auxiliary charger is rated at 1 A.
  • Cutting fuel makes the scooter show error E001; the app also displays battery voltage, but the wiring ended up as a messy "spider" hidden under black silicone.

There is no problem here, it goes and works for me. It comes from this "blue" 36V wire from the display. I gave it through the diode, because the signal also goes to turn on this stepdown and I preferred to separate these two circuits with diodes.

Thanks, I'm writing with you, by the way, I saw on Ali 18650 50000mAh 10pcs for 120 PLN, two such packages and BMS 10s for about 45 PLN, plus plastic for grouping, e.g. 10s2p and for my 36v 350W drive and 36V 16A controller, it gives it's almost 300km on a single charge, ok maybe you would have to buy a 42v 4A charging adapter for 80 PLN, because the one I have for 2A will land for a long time, but the calculated range gives food for thought, did you do it?

Thanks, I came to the same conclusion - unfortunately, there are currently no technologies that allow such parameters.

I confirm, although it would be nice to have such a range on a single charge. You could face Tesla on the highway. ;)

It works ok, the power consumption when the ignition is turned off is negligible.
GPS locator for scooters from Lidl
📢 Listen (AI):

Topic summary

✨ A user shared their experience of installing a GPS locator on an electric scooter purchased from Lidl, specifically the EKS 77 model. The GPS locator, model MV730 from Majfrends, operates within a voltage range of 9-90 V, making it compatible with the scooter's 36 V battery. The user highlighted features such as voltage monitoring through the tracking app and the ability to remotely cut off power, which they utilized as an on/off switch. Concerns were raised about the potential risks of the locator malfunctioning while in use, as well as the importance of battery management to prevent discharge. Discussions also touched on legal classifications of scooters with seats, the accuracy of GPS under various conditions, and the need for proper SIM card configuration for the locator to function effectively. Additional suggestions included using a relay for power cut-off and considerations for battery consumption.

FAQ

TL;DR: A 2 G MV730 tracker draws only 29 mA (≈4.8 Ah / month) and can remotely disable a 36 V Lidl EKS 77 scooter; “Nothing dangerous will happen, it will just coast” [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593720] [Elektroda, atek000, post #19593430]

Why it matters: you gain theft-alert, battery-voltage read-out and an app-controlled kill-switch in one low-cost mod.

Quick Facts

• Claimed supply range: 9–90 V DC for MV730 tracker [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19594790] • Relay coil inside tracker switches 9–15 V DC [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19592533] • Stand-by draw: 29 mA (≈0.7 Wh/h) on similar MT-1 model [Elektroda, atek000, post #19593430] • Real-world top speed of Lidl EKS 77 under 61 kg rider: 24.9 km/h [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593720] • MV730 price ≈ US$18 incl. relay & harness [“AliExpress MV730”]

Which GPS tracker fits a 36 V scooter without extra regulators?

MV730 accepts 36 V directly because its DC input range starts at 9 V and is spec’d up to 90 V [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19594790] Many cheaper 2 G modules stop at 40 V, so check the silk-screen or datasheet first.

Does the tracker really tolerate up to 90 V?

The printed leaflet and online specification list 9–90 V, while the product page headline shows 6–40 V. The author runs it on 42 V during charging without issues [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19594790] Always bench-test at your pack’s peak voltage before installation.

Will the scooter throw me over the bars if the tracker or relay fails?

No. If the relay opens the motor merely loses drive; the scooter coasts like you released the throttle [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593720] Brakes and steering keep working. Failure therefore equals a gentle rollout, not an emergency stop.

What SIM card and data plan works best?

Any prepaid nano-SIM with 2 G or 3 G fallback suffices; the author uses T-Mobile PL data-only SIM and logs just "hundreds of kilobytes per month" [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593825] Choose an operator with long credit validity to avoid seasonal disassembly.

GPS accuracy seems unlikely under a metal deck—does it work?

Yes. Even when mounted low under a steel cover the MV730 still reports street-level accuracy once outdoors. Indoors it reverts to GSM cell triangulation and can wander up to 900 m [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593825]

How do I bring the tracker online when the app shows it in China?

Follow this 3-step reset:
  1. SMS “RESET#” to the device.
  2. Send APN credentials: “APN,apnname,user,pass#”.
  3. Set platform server: “SERVER,47.88.85.196,7700#”. After reboot the status should flip to Online within 60 s [Elektroda, neo62, post #19643516]

Can the blue display wire serve both ACC sensing and motor enable?

Yes. The 36 V "blue" line signals ignition. Feed it to ACC through a 1N4007 diode and to the step-down enable pin. Diodes isolate the two circuits [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19592533]

Is a seated electric scooter a moped under Polish law?

Polish road code defines a moped as any two-wheel vehicle with ≤4 kW and ≤45 km/h, regardless of pedals [Dz.U. 2021.450 art. 2 pkt 46]. Experts argue that adding a saddle reclassifies the 300 W EKS 77 as a moped, triggering insurance and registration obligations [Elektroda, edz, post #19593879]

Edge case: what if someone cuts the lock and pushes the scooter away?

With fuel-cut active the motor stays off, but wheels roll freely. Movement alarms still trigger and GPS reports live location, letting you track the thief in real time [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19593720]

Can I hide a tracker inside a cigarette pack for 24 h asset recovery?

Possible but bulky. You need a micro-tracker plus a 5 → 12 V boost module or a dedicated 12 V powerbank. Inductive charging adds coils that may not fit inside the pack [Elektroda, A.J.Electronics, post #19594947] Runtime under 24 h is feasible with a 1 Ah Li-ion cell.

What relay should I use if I skip the phone charger?

Choose a 36 V coil automotive relay and drive its ground through the tracker’s cut-off wire. Tests show tracker’s transistor sinks correctly at pack voltage; verify dropout current before final wiring [Elektroda, SunTechnology, post #19691496]
