I am looking for a solution to automatically read the gas meter (ordinary mechanical). Preferably the solution would read the status e.g.: every 5 minutes, so that it is known when the consumption was.

You can use a pulse sensor for the gas meter and attach something further. This sensor probably gives a pulse once on the last digit of the clock, I would have to check.
