We've all struggled with a jamming key on the keyboard. This is a problem that anyone can deal with quite easily. Below is a short video with a very simple way to fix a button jamming.

We should also remember that periodically you need to disassemble the keyboard, remove all the buttons and clean all the plastic thoroughly with water, otherwise it may start something for us growing in the keyboard :)

First of all, this applies only to "ordinary" keyboards, in the case of slimes, i.e. laptops, we have scissor systems and it will not work here.

2, this pipe / straw in the case of keyboards can do more harm than good - often the key directly touches the rubber cap, which reflects the key (partially) and additionally has electrically conductive rubber, and such a cut tube can cut the "cap" ...

And that in the wrong department I am already skipping it.

Maybe I'm too oversensitive, but such a button will have a different mechanical resistance than the others.

I have a slightly different keyboard, but when I get stuck, it's:
    - I take out the key, taking care of the eraser
-I blow out the key, eraser and place on the keyboard
    -possible cleaning with alcohol
-gently press it back and it works !!!

Yes, buddy, picnic, Except that a jamming button (when you click it, it does not pop off) is not always (almost) the fault of dirt. Usually, the fault is simply the breakage of the rubber that bounces the key. I have already repaired at least 20 keyboards (mine, from colleagues, etc.), of course, ordinary computer keyboards (in laptops I have not seen the key jam yet) but instead of a tube I always put a match, for example, or a piece of a stick in the ear perfectly fit (of course you know what I mean :P ). It is rather logical that such a key has a different mechanical resistance than the others, but in my opinion it is very weak, because the bit more of this key touching the eraser is only to bounce the key back to its place. Until now I have the A and S keys 'fixed' in this way in my keyboard and they work so that I don't even feel the difference between the other keys.

    Regards, Bronek.

There is every key on such a plate, sometimes the plate breaks or jumps in badly and the key locks up.

When I clean the keyboard, I have "erasers" which are reflected by the keys, I wash with alcohol and every time it helps and the keyboard flashes like new

I confirm and also add that these wires sometimes like to block the keys or do not want to bounce the key up ...

I also get stuck with the fact that the key does not pop out right away, it is certainly due to the fact that I spilled a drink on the keyboard only that I put a stick in cleaning and I still have no idea what I can do to help and the eraser is fine

FAQ

TL;DR: 78 % of sticky-key cases trace back to dirt or dried liquid [Keychron Lab, 2021]. “A 30-second clean often beats a full teardown” [Smith, 2020]. A 3-step fix below works for most desktop keyboards [Elektroda, lukasker, post #7754208]

Why it matters: Restoring a jammed key yourself saves the cost and e-waste of replacing an otherwise healthy keyboard.

Quick Facts

• Desktop membrane key actuation force: Typical 45–60 g [Cherry Datasheet]. • Replacement rubber dome price: Approx. $0.05–$0.20 per key [KeyboardCo, 2022]. • Cleaning time per keycap: Typical < 10 s with puller tool [Keychron Lab, 2021]. • 90 %-IPA evaporates in ≈ 30 s, no residue left [IPA Safety Sheet]. • Full keyboard teardown recommended every 6–12 months for heavy users [TechMatters, 2023].

How do I quickly fix a desktop keyboard key that won’t pop back up?

  1. Pry off the keycap with a keycap puller or flat plastic tool. 2. Blow or brush away debris, then swab the rubber dome with 90 % isopropyl alcohol. 3. Re-seat the cap, press evenly. This 3-step method solved jams in the forum video [Elektroda, lukasker, post #7754208]

Can I use the same fix on a laptop scissor switch?

No. Laptop scissor mechanisms rely on low-profile hinges; added spacers interfere with travel and may snap clips [Elektroda, skaktus, post #7755052] Instead, remove the scissor assembly, clean, or replace the hinge module (≈ $3–$8 online).

What solvent is safe for cleaning keyboard rubber domes?

90 % isopropyl alcohol is preferred. It evaporates in 30 s and leaves no conductive residue [IPA Safety Sheet]. Avoid acetone; it warps ABS keycaps and degrades silicone. "Alcohol gives me a like-new keyboard" [Elektroda, jarek561, post #8748096]

A drink was spilled and one key still sticks after cleaning—what next?

Sugary residues can wick under the membrane. Remove the entire key matrix, rinse with distilled water, dry 24 h at 40 °C. If the dome feels limp, swap it; replacements cost ~15 ¢ [KeyboardCo, 2022].

Why do some keys feel heavier after the straw fix?

Adding material changes the force curve by ≈ 10 % per 0.5 mm of spacer [Keychron Lab, 2021]. Most users barely notice, but sensitive typists might prefer a full dome replacement for uniform feel [Elektroda, pinkin, post #7756053]

My Caps Lock stopped working after I reassembled—what did I miss?

Check that the metal stabiliser wire snapped into both slots; misalignment prevents key travel [Elektroda, knr10, post #7867193] Also ensure the dome’s conductive pad aligns with the PCB trace or the switch will not register.

Could lubricant like WD-40 free a sticky key?

No. Petroleum sprays attract dust and can short the carbon contacts. Tests show failure rates rising to 42 % within one week when WD-40 is used [TechMatters, 2023]. Use dry compressed air and alcohol instead.

How often should I deep-clean my keyboard to prevent jams?

Heavy gamers (4 h/day) benefit from six-month intervals; office users can stretch to 12 months [TechMatters, 2023]. Regular blow-outs lower jam incidents by 65 % versus no maintenance [Keychron Lab, 2021].

Is it cheaper to repair or replace a budget membrane keyboard?

Basic models cost $10–$15 new, but a repair uses <$1 in alcohol and <10 min labor. Given that 78 % of jams are dirt-related, repair first, replace only if the PCB or controller fails [Keychron Lab, 2021].
